The term Spelljammer can refer to both a ship and pilot, often called Spelljammer ship and Spelljammer helmsman. The pilot interfaces with the ship through the Spelljammer’s Helm fashioned as a wheel, seat or helmet but can be any object as long as it is connected to the ship at a fixed place. A Spelljammer projects an envelope of breathable air the size of its deck. It also maintains a gravitic force perpendicular to the ships location in relation to Itoa in the center of the universe, this is called the Gravitic Plane, in essence this means that while the Void is a three dimensional space of staggering proportions two spelljammer ships will always interact with eachother on a two dimensional plane of gravity as though they were sailing on the same sea. In order to move through the void at interstellar speeds, maintaining its air envelope and the gravitic plane, a Spelljammer needs a constant flow of Power which is most commonly provided by sails designed to absorb Power while the ship is flying through Leylines or on the Astral Sea. As such most Spelljammers are limited to traversing the Void along the many Leylines connecting the planets in the Core. Batteries capable of storing Power are cumbersome and extremely expensive as they require copious amounts of high quality precious gems.
In order to interface with a Spelljammer the helmsman needs to have the ability to channel Power, most commonly found in spellcasters. While interfaced with a Spelljammer helm and touching it, the helmsman gains the following abilities:
You can use the Spelljammier helm to move the ship through the Void, air or water up to the ship’s speed. If the ship is in space and no other objects weighing 1 ton or more are within 1 mile of it, you can use the helm to move the vessel fast enough to travel a significant fraction of speed of light, the exact speed depends on the condition of the Leyline or Astral Sea the vessel is sailing on, as well as the quality and construction of the spelljammer ship itself.
You can steer the vessel, albeit in a somewhat clumsy fashion, in much the way that a rudder or oars can be used to maneuver a seafaring ship
At any time, you can see and hear what’s happening on and around the vessel as though you were standing in a location of your choice aboard it. You are also considered to be touching anything the ship is touching with regards to targeting spells.
Spelljammers require a constant supply of Power to
