The Ubri speak Ascelic as their first language out of tradition, but most also know Ascelic (Common)

Government
Tricameral Stratocratic Republic. It has three councils, the war council, the mage council, and the civilian council. Some decisions are delegated to just one of those, some need all three, some need only two of them, depending on what sort of issue it is. Within each council, they probably also use either majority or unanimous voting, depending on the issue. The war council and mage council consist of the most high-ranking generals and magi. The civilian council is elected by the people.

The culture of the Ubri is very focused on honor, family, and the warrior's spirit. Nothing comes before protecting your home and family. They have a natural mistrust of trickery, the unknown, or anything that is different from themselves.

Relations
The Ubri begrudgingly coexist with the other states in Aure Nova, for now. They get along well with Orcs and have a particular distrust for elves and Kender.

Choose your Path

Life is the ability to provide, protect, and lead.  An Ubri is never truly defeated until they die.  Ubri choose the path along which they'll carry the weight of themselves and their families. These paths are led by the three dieties revered by the Ubri: the Warrior, the Mother, and the Scholar.

  • A male who chooses the Path of the Warrior is given the honorific Bellatus, unless they earn a higher one.  A retired veteran retains this title.  All men are conscripted when they come of age, but only those who make it through training are eligible to choose this path.
  • A female who chooses Path of the Warrior is given the honorific Bellata.  These are female warriors or veterans who are not mages, but not mages.  Belletas dress like men and either have short hair, wear it down, or put it all up. Simple, practical, one-step hairstyles.  In Ubri culture, there is no rule stopping women from doing everything that men can do, as long as they are physically capable of doing it.  This does mean that female warriors are less common, and that some don't make it through training.
  • A male who chooses Path of the Scholar will have fought while conscripted, but ultimately either chose to or have been ordered to serve in another way.  The honorific for this is Logio, and they can have any other profession other than warrior.
  • Females may only choose the Path of the Scholar if they are mages.  They have the honorific Logia, unless they earn a higher one.  Logias tend to wear flowy, non-restrictive dresses or robes, may wear pants, and wear their hair the same as Bellatas.
  • Males may not choose the Path of the Mother.
  • Females who choose the Path of the Mother are given the honorific of Kyria.  In Ubri culture, it is only acceptable for a woman to prioritize her career over starting a family if it’s to become a mage or warrior; she can pursue any other career, but family comes first. Kyrias serve the empire by prioritizing motherhood over their profession, if they even have a profession outside of motherhood.   A kyria’s clothing is feminine and depends on their economic status, and they are expected to do something more elaborate with their hair than the Logias and Bellatas.

Your Weapon

All Ubri, regardless of context or station, even if they are taking a bath, must have a weapon on them at all times.  For the more gentle of Kyrias, this may just be a small letter opener or dagger-like scissors.  There are some contexts were a large weapon would not be welcome, but this is not common, and a shortsword is almost always acceptable. Incarcerated criminals are given small clubs, unless they prove disobedient and earn the great shame of it being taken away.

When an Ubri dies, there is little care about whether the body is recovered; it is the weapon that is important. The Ubri believe that a piece of your spirit lives on within the weapon, immortalizing your memory.  Instead of graveyards, they memorialize the weapons of fallen family members in their homes.
