Anx

The Anx

An Anx (plural Anx) is a creature born from the mortal power of belief and fear of the unknown. Their forms vary greatly depending on where they dwell and how they are shaped, but all Anx share one truth: fear of the beings themselves has no effect, yet fear of their territory strengthens them and allows them to multiply.

Anx do not possess mortal souls, and many cannot truly die. Their forms can be broken or destroyed, but unless their fear is banished, they will reform.

Anx are territorial and often cruel to mortals who stray too close. Yet, many are strangely drawn to innocence. Some guide lost children home unharmed, others abduct them — raising them with a twisted kindness or feeding on their fear. Some are softened by purity of heart, appearing in mortal guise to woo virgins with promises of love or wonder. Such unions and entanglements often give rise to Anxlings, mortals born from or forever touched by an Anx.

Little Anx

The weakest of their kind, Little Anx range from fragile wretches to tough but bestial predators. Few are strong enough to change shape, and even fewer can mimic a mortal form. Some can speak, and rarer still, some can speak in Tongues.

Temperament: Often as afraid of mortals as mortals are of them. They attack only with trickery or overwhelming numbers

Mortality: Can be slain outright, though they may return if fear lingers.

True Names: To know the True Name of a Little Anx is to control it utterly. It cannot harm you directly, nor can it lie — though it may still bring danger upon you indirectly. In the hands of an ally, the True Name of a Little Anx can even amplify its abilities.

Fell Anx

Fell Anx are cunning, cruel, and formidable. They walk among mortals with convincing guises, though sharp eyes may notice the flaws: eyes that gleam too brightly, shadows that twist wrongly, smiles that never falter.

Mortality: Can be slain, but never by natural means. Only knowledge of their unique weakness or magic as powerful as their own can make their death permanent.

True Names: Speaking the True Name of a Fell Anx weakens or repels it, and with mastery, may allow control. A Fell Anx cannot kill one who knows its True Name, but it can imprison their soul, and it cannot speak falsehood to them. In the hands of an ally, the True Name can bolster the Fell Anx’s power.

Eldritch Anx

Eldritch Anx are creatures of legend, towering terrors of raw fear. Tales exist of their destruction, but such stories are debated at best. Only the most ancient and extraordinary of magics might hope to bind one, let alone kill it.

Appearance: They can walk flawlessly among mortals, but their immense presence bleeds through — the wrongness of their perfection betrays them.

Mortality: Effectively immortal. Containment or banishment is barely possible; killing one is all but impossible.

True Names: Everything true of the Fell Anx applies here, but with far greater risk. To know the True Name of an Eldritch Anx is a secret that could reshape kingdoms, if one survives long enough to wield it.

Sovereign Anx

The Sovereigns are the apex of fear — cosmic terrors, embodiments of archetypal nightmares such as the endless sea, the consuming void, or the storm eternal. They are not simply creatures; they are forces of existence.

Mortality: Cannot cease to exist, so far as mortal understanding allows. At best, they may be sealed, banished, or briefly contained — but only by divine power.

True Names: Their True Names are beyond mortal speech. They are not words but experiences — visions, storms, symphonies of dread. Only an Eldritch Anx might hope to wield the True Name of a Sovereign, and even then, only if granted the chance to live long enough to try.

The Genie's Curse is a path for an Anxling to ascend to a full Anx, though it doesn't necessarily make sense for every type of Anx.
