The Genie's Curse

An Anxling is sometimes chosen to be given the chance to ascend, and become a full Anx.  Such Anxlings on this path are referred to as Genies.

To the best of current knowledge, there is no way to lift the curse.  The only ways out are to either die or to ascend.

Requirements

Only those with the following are selected for the Genie's Curse.

  • Cunning and willing to step on others to get what you want.
  • Intelligent and capable of great things
  • Resentful of the nature of mortals, or of society, beyond any resentment caused by unacceptance of Anxlings
  • Thirst for power

These things must describe you at the time that you receive the curse, but things may change later (which does not lift the curse!).

Features

Wishgranter
If you can grant 100 wishes made to you by mortals, you will ascend and become an Anx.  Refusing or failing a wish sets you back.  If the first three wishes made to you are failures or refusals, you die.  No singular mortal gets more than three wishes.  Genie wishes follow these four rules:

  1. You cannot wish someone dead.
  2. You cannot wish someone back from the dead.
  3. You cannot wish for someone to love another.
  4. You cannot wish for more wishes.
Special Cases
  • Wishes that can be interpreted as asking for genie power, or wishes asking to make the genie a full Anx.  The genie can choose to grant this wish by immediately ascending to full Anx, and bestowing his same type of Anxlinghood onto the person who wished it, along with the genie's curse, but only a "newbie" amount of power.  This new genie has to fulfill their own 100 wishes, along with however many wishes the original genie had left. If the new genie's wish obligation would exceed 150, this wish cannot be granted at this time, but the genie can promise to come back to them and grant it later. This is NOT common knowledge.  Anx know it, and genies realize it only when such a wish is made.
  • Wishes that conflict. The newest wish takes precedence.

Lamp
You have a "Lamp" (which could be any appropriately-sized object of your choosing) that you call home. You, and only you, can go inside, where you have a simple bedroom. You can bring in and take out possessions (a backpack's worth of stuff). A mortal can summon you out of it by shaking it, cleaning it, or whatever makes sense for the item.  If a person is holding your lamp when they make a wish, you MUST try to grant the wish.  You are compelled to try to grant the wish, but the interpretation of it is up to you.  You can never move or manipulate your own Lamp.

Clarification: anyone can make a wish at any time, whether or not they have the lamp.  The person who has the lamp is simply the only person whose wishes have the compulsion attached.  No matter who made the wish, if the genie grants it, it counts toward their 100.

Magic
You begin to develop magical powers as appropriate for the type of Anx, without an Ethereum shard. If you already had an Ethereum shard at the time that you received your curse, the shard is absorbed into you. To be clear, receiving the curse doesn't actually grant you the power to grant wishes, only the obligation.  How exactly you grant them is your problem.  For example, if someone wishes for money, then you need to go out and steal it or earn it yourself.

Weakness
You have a weakness to your opposing element, or any type of magic that strongly opposes your Anx type.

Summon
When someone calls out to you in a moment of need, if you can concentrate on focusing your force of will, you can go to them.  You simply appear at their side.

Unaging
You remain at whatever physical age you were when you received your curse.

Getting your curse

An Anxling who is aware of the curse as a possibility might ask an Anx for it.  Any Anx can grant the curse, but you will always ascend per your lineage, not per the Anx who cursed you.  An Anx might also simply notice you and choose you, when you may or may not have been aware that they were watching you.  An Anx who chooses you for the curse may speak to you in a dream and explain how it works, or they may explain another way.  In rare cases, they may leave you to your own devices to figure it out.

Why this curse?

It is said that the reason why the curse functions as it is, is because granting wishes for others without any special wish-granting powers is a demonstration of capability and power, a cut above what the average mortal can achieve.  By binding oneself to the whim of mortals in this way, you are also proving that you are capable of thriving when your existence depends on careful manipulation of your relationship with others, as the Anx need mortal fear of their territory in order to thrive.  It is a trail, a gauntlet that you run to prove yourself worthy of ascension.
