Battle of the Sewer Stronghold
- Immediately following the events of WoW C1.S2.02 Warehouse Warfare, Sewer Stronghold, our characters and Renaer had tracked Floon Blaagmar's kidnappers to the doorstep of the Unknown controlled by the Agents of the Overseer
- Fearing that Floon's life may be in danger, the group rushed inside. TMM05 was forced to stay behind in the main sewer passage because it couldn't fit through the narrow doorways. The rest of the group proceeded through a series of chambers and jumped into battle as they came upon a larger room with vaulted ceilings. They saw a half-orc wizard in the process of torturing Floon, flanked by two Duergar. Further back in the room was a familiar looking mage sitting on a stone throne caressing a horrific creature composed of a slimy pink brain with four clawed legs (an Intellect Devourer). Bartholomew Glockenspiel immediately recognized the mage as the one they had seen in the events of WoW C1.S0.00- Whispers of Waterdeep Campaign Kickoff in the South Sea Caves. Bart later reminded the party that this mage had revealed itself to be a Mind Flayer in disguise.
- Fearonuh kicked things off by launching her javelin at a Duergar, followed up by a blast of fire from Pyper. Metatronia began firing with her crossbow, and Bruce came in swinging with his greatsword, landing a savage blow on one of the Duergar. All the while, TMM05 began using his drills to tunnel into the room from the main sewer tunnel, causing the whole area to rumble.
- The Duergar were enraged and hurled racial slurs at Metatronia and Bart, each one of the mortal enemy races of the Duergar. They clenched their fists, and they grew from dwarf size to a towering 12 feet tall. They began battering the party with their enlarged war hammers.
- Bart quickly shrunk one of the Duergar back to normal size with a spell of Reduction. Next, the disguised Mind Flayer stood up and sent a massive bolt of lightning arcing through the battlefield. Bruce, Pyper, Vonna, and Bart took significant damage, and the blast accidentally killed the smaller Duergar. Meanwhile, Renaer expertly parried the other Duergar's attack, slashing at its legs. The half-orc mage finally joined in with more fire magic, searing Vonna, Fearonuh and Pyper with a cone of flames.
- Metatronia ducked into in a small room to hide, as Bruce finished off the nightmarish brain creature. Bartholomew fired back at the Mind Flayer, hurling a glowing ball of fire and breaking his illusion magic on impact. Its horrific tentacle wreathed face was revealed as the look of fear began grow in its eyes. Pyper brought more fire, shooting jets of flame from her pointed fingers, finishing off the last Duergar. Vonna followed up with a savage blow from her Maul, calling forth the divine magic of Tyr to strike down the aberration.
- At that moment, TMM05 broke through the stone wall and crashed about 8 feet down into the room, followed by a flood of sewer water. In the chaos, Metatronia darted from her hiding place and drove her ornate Drow dagger deep into the thigh of the orc mage while whispering something in the ancient language of her people. The torches in the room flickered as the veil between the The Material World and the Shadowfell grew thin for a moment, and vengeful wailing spirits reached through to claw at both of her remaining enemies. They smelled the orc's soul close to death, and it down with them as they dissipated.
- The Mind Flayer knew the tides of battle had turned, and began his retreat. He unleashed a powerful psychic attack, nearly killing Pyper, Bruce and Metatronia. He glided into the next room, but not before Vonna and Fearonuh were able to get two last attacks in. However, the Mind Flayer warded off the attacks with a spell that created a shield of magical force around himself. He made his way to a sone pillar and pressed a crystal into a familiar looking symbol which activated a glowing portal. He stepped into the portal and was gone. Vonna quickly smashed the activation point, closing the portal.
Completing the Rescue Mission
- The group tended to the injured, stabilizing Pyper, Bruce, Metatronia and Floon. Renaer came to the aid of the unconscious Floon, and the two shared a heartfelt moment where it was confirmed they indeed had a sexual relationship. The party did a quick scan of the lair, identifying the secret door they had missed previously, but missing some other secrets. They located a chest with gold, a spellbook, and looted the corpses of the Duergar. This included two war picks, two sets of dwarven sized scale mail, and two metal shields.
- They made their way back to the surface and Renaer and Floon parted from the group after thanking them profusely. Renaer said he owed them his life and promised to return the favor however he could.
- With the first rays of the sun just beginning to rise over the horizon, the group arrived at the Yawning Portal and were greeted by Durnan and Volo. The group was served a hearty breakfast and Durnan couldn't help but pry for details about their rescue mission. Durnan invited them to join his list of adventuring parties for hire, and the group dubbed themselves Unknown at the suggestion of Volo.
- Volo then sheepishly admitted he didn't have all the gold he had promised as a reward. Instead he offered up a property he owned, which he claimed to be valued at over 18,000 gold, about 20 times the original reward. The group agreed to a tour the next day before they made a final decision. They all took much needed hot baths before sleeping for 12+ hours.
The Deed Transfer of Trollskull Manor
- The next morning Volo regaled the group with a narrated walking tour of Waterdeep on the way to Trollskull Alley in the North Ward. Once there, he introduced them to the different small businesses of the quaint shopping district before the group turned their attention to the property in question, Lost and Found Tavern. The four story run down property clearly had been grand at one point, but was now filled with cobwebs and broken furnature. Volo confirmed the once beloved tavern had passed through many owners after the original proprietor passed away and the business closed its doors. After some prodding, Volo admitted that the place was well known to be haunted by a poltergeist, and that he had acquired it for research purposes for an upcoming book on ghosts. While certainly unsettling, the poltergeist was not known to have harmed anyone. Vonna was able to use her divine senses to briefly glimpse the specter within 10 feet of her before it quickly vanished.
- After some serious deliberation, the group decided that the property was too good to pass up. Volo brought them to the North Ward Courthouse and was able to use his connections to get a hearing before Magister Silverhelve within an hour. While waiting, the party got identification papers for those new to Waterdeep, paid their taxes, filled out the deed transfer paperwork, and incorporated a new business: Lost and Found, LLC. Fearonuh had unexpected expertise in the matter, having previously created an LLC for her jewelry business. An exasperated Silverhelve witnessed the deed transfer and shooed the group away.
- Excited to settle into their new home base, the group returned to Trollskull Manor and staged a classic 90's (the year is 1492) cleanup montage over the next two days. However, odd things continued to happen that kept the group on edge. Any fires they attempted to build filled the whole room with smoke, despite what appeared to be fully functional chimneys. One night, in search of a midnight snack, Fearonuh heard footsteps creaking on the stairs, but nobody was there. The next day, Bruce narrowly avoided a roof tile that smashed onto the ground as he was leaving on an errand.
- On the third day they were visited by Broxley Fairkettle, a representative from the Fellowship of Innkeepers. He was excited to hear the group was planning to reopen the property as a tavern and offered to liaise with all the necessary trade guilds for the renovations, if they committed to join his guild. They accepted his help and within the next few days the renovation project had been scoped out and minimum startup costs were determined to be 1250 gold.
