The name "Makoto" (truth, honesty) is an obvious pseduonym, and the identity of the author has become a topic of conversation almost to rival the ideas themselves. People claim that Makoto may be nearly anyone: a Crane nobleman seeking greater power for his clan given their trade with the gaijin and naval strength, a crafty Scorpion laying the foundation for a more subtle scheme, variously supporters of either Matsu Tsuko or Toturi, a wealthy merchant seeking to involve himself in politics above his station, a wise monk imparting his enlightened truth to the secular world, even a few claiming that it is the emperor himself seeking to have his ideas appreciated on their merits alone.
