Born into Tribe Threefinger, how Griz ended up in the Barony of Na'Ka'Ve is unknown. What is known is that he has been friends with Gak Iroh and Grakmst for a long time, and that he lost his ability to speak when one of his bombs exploded in his face, launching shrapnel into his throat and lower face and destroying his larynx. As such he always wears a scarf, even in the hottest weather (not that it's ever hot in Na'Ka'Ve) to cover the huge scars across his neck.
