One of the older Paladin orders of the Church of the Nameless, the Order of Society traces its origins to the early 2A. It began as an association of paladin-errants devoted to The Nameless One, operating without a permanent headquarters and travelling between communities where their services were required.
The Order became increasingly established over the following centuries and eventually acquired a permanent seat in Treighte, taking possession of an old chapel in what is now Balla that long predated the Order itself. The chapel later became the heart of the Monastery of the Glorious Shield, which developed around it as the Order's principal religious house in the region. Although now closely associated with the monastery, the Order of Society is considerably older than the institution based there and has never been confined to Balla. Its chapters and individual Paladins have spread widely beyond Treighte.
The Order uses the red thistle native to Balla and the neighbouring Tiran counties as one of its principal emblems, a tradition adopted during its later history and now strongly associated with its presence in the eastern Kingdom of Tir.
