The Monastery of the Glorious Shield of The Nameless One, known informally as the Shield or just Balla Monastery. It is a religious complex in one of the poorer areas of Balla, centred around a small church. Run by the Order of Society, the complex also includes Purity House, a dormitory, a balneary, a refectory, a large library, an infirmary, a chapel of rest and the Houses of the Holy (a brothel, as is customary for many places of worship of The Nameless One). As well as numerous other minor buildings surrounded by a cloistered wall. It houses numerous monks and nuns, as well as a chapter of Paladins.

The Royal Arena of Balla sits a stone's throw away from the monastery to the north, a little further up the mountain.

During the events of Tale of Tir and Nox, Part II, the Order and monastery is reinforced by The Order of Dark Paladins - Fuk'Mar Branch. It is believed that despite the city's loss, this holy site still resists.

History

The monastery has its beginnings with the church that forms its centre. Due to poor record keeping within what would become the First Kingdom of Tir as a whole prior to its foundation, the loss of many of Treighte's records during the fire that destroyed nearly all of the town, and it being a little under two millennia beyond living memory, it is difficult to pinpoint an exact date of construction as it is for the majority of Tir's oldest structures. It is known from the sparse existing records however that the building was in existence as a functional place of worship by 1A 2952, and that it was constructed on the orders of Baron Artur Devliss, who as a follower of the Nameless One himself ordered a chapel built for him and his family, and was built specifically to the architectural style of the rest of the town for aesthetic reasons. Taking into account the length of time construction would require, It served this purpose for a couple of decades, but by the time Artur's nephew Jonah became Baron some 100 years later the diminutive chapel was being used as a storage building by a nearby smithy. While not the predominant religion for the area (even to this day, that remains the Church of the Green), there is as with most places always worshippers of any of The Five and as such there were enough worshippers who found this disrespectful for Jonah to take notice. Even after he ordered the church emptied of goods and restored, it remained empty despite being pristine from the outside.
