Netheril, or the Netherese Empire, was an ancient, human magocratic empire that dominated Faerûn during the first half of The Age of Humanity. Netheril is considered the pinnacle of human mastery of magic and the
Weave, whose achievements have never been matched in the thousands of
years since its fall. The Netherese lived in cities built upon inverted mountains that floated miles above the surface of Toril. Netherese society was build on a strict caste system with many different caste levels. The two main distinctions were between High Netheril, the nobles, courtiers, and subordinates who lived in luxury in the floating cities, and Low Netheril, who lived on the ground beneath these cities and served at the absolute will of their masters.
