Faerûn is the northwestern continent in the super-continent consisting
of Faerûn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara on the planet Toril. Faerûn was
originally inhabited by the elves, who founded the first empires
controlling vast regions of the continent and built great cities and
edifices that many modern settlements use as their foundations. Dwarves
were the next humanoid species to find predominance in Faerûn,
developing their own societies and settlements, some of which exist to
the present. Humans were relatively late comers to Faerûn but have
quickly become the most dominant species in population and political
power. In the shadow of and the liminal spaces between these great
empires, many other species prospered and created their own histories.
