The Xla'rion are an Sentient Alien species renowned for their sensory precision and unparalleled navigational abilities. As one of the five founding species of Gospel of K'zon, they occupy a vital place in the spiritual and political fabric of The Last Hand. Evolving on a planet orbiting a pulsar, the Xla'rion's survival in such an unforgiving environment forged their remarkable antennae-like sensory organs and honed their unique frequency-based communication. While this granted them unparalleled skill in detecting and interpreting skim-space waves, it left them woefully unequipped to grasp artificial signals like Human radio waves or recognize the significance of foreign spacecraft or unmanned space probes such as the ancient Voyager.

Origin and Homeworld

The Xla'rion hail from a world locked in orbit around a pulsar, where the constant radiation barrage shaped their evolutionary path. With surface conditions oscillating between lethal radiation storms and deep-shadowed cold zones, the Xla'rion adapted by developing heightened senses and a mobile, semi-nomadic lifestyle. The need to traverse hazardous terrain fostered the growth of collective survival strategies, encouraging social structures akin to schools of fish.

Interestingly, Xla'rion civilization bypassed traditional technological milestones common to other species. It is often remarked that the Xla'rion achieved space travel before they invented the wheel, relying instead on biological innovation and adaptation to fuel their ventures into the cosmos. Driven by a cautious yet persistent survival instinct, their early spacefaring efforts aimed to seek refuge from their pulsar-star's gradual degradation. Their voyages were guided by intuition and natural navigational talents rather than complex machinery.

The fateful misinterpretation of Voyager's golden disk, seen by the Xla'rion as a curious artifact, led them farther from the Soul-system and into the path of the Kzak—a technologically superior and expansionist species. This chance encounter irrevocably altered the Xla'rion's destiny, leading to subjugation and eventual inclusion in the Kzak's interstellar empire. Their storycontinues to shape the role of the Xla'rion within the Gospel of Kzon, where they are both revered as prophets and respected as the silent, watchful navigators of the Last Hand's fleets.

Physical Overview

The Xla'rion are slim, elongated insectoid crustaceans with a semi-translucent carapace that glimmers faintly under certain light frequencies. Their defining feature is the set of long, sensitive antennae and sensory organs that extend up to three times the length of their bodies making a member of the species roughly 3 meters (10ft) long. These antennae are hyper-sensitive to vibrations, magnetic fields, and are even able to sense shifts in other dimentions such as skim-space.

Their large, compound eyes bear resemblance to Old Earth's dragonflies, capable of detecting a wide spectrum of light beyond the visible range. The Xla'rion's body mirrors that of a shrimp or prawn, with a segmented tail, thorax, and ten multi-jointed legs. Each leg terminates in small, dexterous digits suited for gripping surfaces and delicate manipulation. Despite their alien physiology, they are exclusively herbivorous, evolved to the hardy plant life that survived in the thin atmospheres of their homeworld.

In addition to their physical traits, the Xla'rion are bioelectrically attuned, allowing them to communicate through subtle pulses across their antennae. This biological quirk makes artificial radio signals appear garbled or incomprehensible to them, reinforcing their reliance on biological rather than technological advancement.

Society and Culture

Xla'rion Civilization Pre-Subjugation

Before their subjugation, the Xla'rion were a semi-nomadic spacefaring species. Their reliance on biological senses over advanced technological systems limited their ability to detect and communicate with other civilizations despite their mastery of Wave Skim-Drive technology. They were culturally cautious but driven by survival instincts, as their pulsar-star home world steadily degraded. Seeking refuge, they aimed to explore their nearby space believing they might lead to new allies or habitable worlds.

When the Xla'rion misinterpreted Voyager's golden disk and carried it farther from the Soul-system, they stumbled upon the territory of the Kzak, a technologically sophisticated and domineering species. This fateful encounter altered their trajectory forever.

The Kzak are the second of the eventual five founders of the Gospel of K'zon. This species is characterized by their sharp intellect, expansionist mindset, and a hierarchical, exploitative approach to interspecies relationships. They originate from a tidally-locked planet with vast resources, which fuelled their rapid industrialization and technological progress. The Kzak value efficiency and control above all else, which led them to quickly recognize the potential of the Xla'rion as skim-space navigators.

Subjugation and Role Under the Kzak

After the initial encounter, the Kzak overpowered the Xla'rion, leveraging their advanced technology to enforce dominance. They dismantled much of the Xla'rion’s autonomy, integrating them as a labor caste specializing in piloting Skim-capable vessels. The Kzak equipped the Xla'rion with basic technological enhancements, enough for them to understand common speech and to optimize their natural abilities but not enough to pose a threat.

Under Kzak rule, Xla'rion navigators became an indispensable part of their fleet, especially in treacherous Skim-Space regions. The Xla'rion were both revered for their skill and resented for their dependency on their masters, forming a complex and uneasy dynamic.

The End, the Gospel and Freedom

When the End occured, the Xla'rion navigators where one of the first in the region of space that later became the last hand to notice the sudden change in skim-space and the rapid deteriation of the stars. Though seen as an annomality and without the power to do anything outside of reporting the annomality to their overlords. As the end came and vent the Kzak Empire shattered, and eventually the Xla'rion as a species gained their freedom. Thousand years later it is said that it was a Xla'rion who found K'zon's edict first and later helped lead the Kzak and many other species to the abandoned world where the Gospel of Kzon revealed itself to both species.
