Palprofundia is the southernmost Province of the Holy Empire of Acolytius, known for the dense wetland environments of the Deep Marsh. While it does hold an abundance of lumber resources, the Province is mostly known for its Halfling culture and the Altar of Giants within its borders. Life here is often quiet and uneventful, and that is exactly what draws many people to it.

Cities and Towns

Even though a large area of Palprofundia is uninhabitable due to the Deep Marsh, the Province still holds some large cities and lucrative logging towns. Below are these places.

  • Fallowburn: As the capital, Fallowburn is quite the large city found directly in the center of Palprofundia. The city is a major hotspot for Halfling communities and their culture, which was a main factor in what made the city grow so large. As Halflings are especially known for their food, the town's markets attract many people to try local produce or meals that are sold. Additionally, the city is home to Biffany's School of the Arcane: An esteemed university with Magic education second only to the College of the Arcane.
  • Northlon: Northlon is a town found in northern Palprofundia, situated on the banks of Crater Lake. The town is known for its quaint views, whether they be of the lake or the surrounding meadows. The town is also the closest to the Altar of Giants, which attracts many historians and archeologists to visit and investigate the ruins. Outside of its attractors, Northlon has a thriving beekeeping industry with a multitude of apiaries in the area. Some of the honey made in Northlon gets sent out to the farthest corners of the Empire.
  • Mossborough: Mossborough is a small town located in western Palprofundia, located far within the Deep Marsh. Its name is based on the abundance of hanging moss that grows in the marsh, which is known both for looking pretty and for getting in people's faces while traveling. The people of Mossborough mainly work in agriculture as opposed to lumber, as they harvest endemic herbs from the wilds around the town. Their products may be lucrative, but foraging for them risks the dangers of the Deep Marsh.
  • Aspenmill: Aspenmill is a small town in the eastern stretch of the Deep Marsh, sitting close to the border with Towerfirth. Aspenmill's economy is based around logging, as the Deep Marsh's trees are known for their durable and visually appealing wood. Most of this wood gets made into furniture that sells for a high price, leading to Aspenmill being much wealthier than it seems.

Geography and Points of Interest

Even though Palprofundia is one of the smaller Provinces, it holds some of the most unique sights and difficult terrain.

Palprofundia holds a majority of the Deep Marsh within its borders, which is a notoriously dangerous area to be in despite its lumber and other resources. The loose, flooded soil makes it nearly impossible to construct any buildings and can give way underneath one's feet. In addition, the Marsh is home to dangerous wildlife, such as the Mosswyrm, that deters even the most experienced travelers. There is still, however, roughly half of the Province that is not within the Deep Marsh. While still somewhat swamp-like, the area is much more suitable for establishing cities such as Palprofundia's capital of Fallowburn. These areas in the north of the Province also hold an abundance of wildflowers, which greatly benefit the local apiaries.

The waterways of Palprofundia are quite unique compared to other Provinces, with what seems like no major rivers at first glance. The Termina River reaches Crater Lake at the northern border of the Province, but the water seems to finish its journey there with no outlet. As it turns out, however, the water from Crater Lake seeps through the ground and flows southward into the Sea of Kings, which is what formed the wetland environment and what is now known as the Deep Marsh. While this is an impressive natural feature, it means that Palprofundia has no navigable waterways whatsoever, which has led to some inconveniences when it comes to trade within the Province.

Throughout all of Palprofundia, no landmark is as defining as the Altar of Giants. The mural-covered stones that make up its frame tower against the surrounding landscape, rivaling the height of some mountains. It can be seen on the horizon of many Palprofundian cities such as Fallowburn and Northlon, and it even is visible in more distant cities when the conditions are right. As the Altar predates all of recorded history, the purpose of its creation is shrouded in mystery and attracts countless historians for a chance of discovery.

Economy and Politics

Palprofundia makes its money through its lumber, agriculture, and apiculture industries, with each relying on resources that are only found in the region. The Province's lumber and agriculture both benefit from the flora of the Deep Marsh, whether it be the rich wood of the cypress trees or abundance of herbs that grow in the wetlands. Palprofundia's apiculture is easily the largest industry, however, with the honey that is produced being sent throughout the entirety of the Empire. Apiaries dominate the landscape of northern Palprofundia, and towns such as Northlon thrive off of this. Beyond its industries, Palprofundia has a varied economic environment in its capital of Fallowburn, with a multitude of markets allowing for merchants from all over to come sell their goods.
