Onthar Frume

Righteous Hand of the Order of the Gauntlet, Shield of Elturel, and (in his own words) "a pain in evil's ass"

“We are the light by which others see their path. If we burn bright enough, even devils cast shadows.”
— Attributed to Frume, shortly before a duel with a tiefling duelist in Luskan

Ontharr Frume is the kind of man who makes an impression. Whether it’s the echoing laugh that rattles a hall of paladins, the clanging of mug against mug in his daily ritual of toasts, or the thunderous declaration of holy justice, Frume is difficult to ignore. He is a man of oaths and open hands—of clenched fists and honest mirth.

A high-ranking paladin of Torm and de facto leader of the Order of the Gauntlet in the wake of The War of Dragons, Ontharr Frume has shaped the modern direction of the faction more than any one mortal. In an age of uncertainty and uneasy alliances, Frume became something few could afford to be: trustworthy.

Early Life and Rise

Born in Elturel before its descent and salvation, Frume came of age within a city that knew the weight of its responsibilities. Even as a squire of the Companions, he was known for getting into good trouble—bar brawls to defend the honor of strangers, volunteering to protect convoys from marauding gnolls, and giving stirring speeches that sometimes ended in his superiors having to clean up the consequences.

But it was in the fires of the Tyranny of Dragons that he was truly forged. When the Cult of the Dragon began its apocalyptic gambit to raise Tiamat, Frume coordinated the resistance efforts of the Gauntlet across Faerûn and stood as a key figure in the Council of Waterdeep, forming uneasy but essential bonds with factions such as the Harpers, the Zhentarim, and even Bregan D'aerthe.

He knew when to speak for righteousness—and when to stay silent for the greater good.

Role in the War of Dragons

Frume worked closely with Leosin Erlanthar, the Spirit Wyrmspeaker and High Harper of Waterdeep. Their partnership, unlikely at first, became legendary. Frume provided the moral authority and martial strength of the Gauntlet, while Leosin offered subterfuge, information, and spiritual insight.

Together, they helped orchestrate the alliance that would defeat the Cult of the Dragon at the Battle of Waterdeep, the beginning of the end for Tiamat’s forces. Frume’s forces held the northern gates against the draconic siege, rallying the knights of the Gauntlet in a last stand that might have ended very differently without divine aid from Torm himself. Ontharr Frume personally participated in the Battle at the Well of Dragons, leading Order of the Gauntlet forces in the battle that would be the nail in the coffin for the Cult of the Dragon.

Post-War Legacy

Following the war, Frume helped establish The Concord of Three Blades, a rare and fragile accord between the Harpers, the Gauntlet, and the Zhentarim. Though many in his own faction opposed any dealings with the Black Network, Frume trusted in people over labels. He saw the potential for redemption even in agents of darkness—and the necessity of unity in an age where threats were more subtle and insidious than a charging orc.

He also continued to mentor new Gauntlet agents and helped rebuild the order’s presence in ElturelBaldur’s Gate, and Waterdeep

Despite all this, Frume remains... Frume. He is not above disguising himself to test new recruits, nor below a good pub crawl if it lifts the spirits of his companions. But behind the affability lies a deeply principled warrior, one who still grieves every life lost in the war and carries their memory into every decision he makes.

Closing Remarks

"It is said Ontharr Frume once cracked a skull with laughter alone, for the heretic found himself disarmed by joy rather than blade. The High Marshal does not merely wield Torm’s justice—he embodies it, and yet never lets it rot into sanctimony. In this way, he is both hammer and anvil, forging a brighter world one outrageous toast at a time."
