Matthias

Matthias is a human wizard and scholar, a member of Bromocorah Inc., whose relationship with magic mirrors a programmer’s skepticism toward their own code—utterly lacking in trust. At 6’1”, Matthias has the lean, slightly stooped posture of someone who’s spent decades hunched over tomes and scrolls, his pale skin marked with ink stains and faint burn scars from magical mishaps. His sharp, hazel eyes, often squinting in suspicion, are framed by round spectacles that sit crookedly on his nose, and his thinning, gray-brown hair is perpetually tousled, tied back in a messy bun with a quill stuck through it. A short, scruffy beard adds to his disheveled, scholarly look, and his expression often carries a mix of curiosity and mild disbelief, as if he’s perpetually surprised by his own success, muttering, “Oh, that spell works? Wow.”

Matthias’s attire reflects his academic background, though it’s been adapted for the adventuring life. He wears a long, charcoal-gray robe, its hem frayed and patched from years of use, with deep pockets stuffed with scrolls, a small journal, and odd magical components like dried herbs and cracked crystals. The robe is adorned with faded silver runes that occasionally flicker with residual magic, and a wide, leather belt holds a battered spellbook, its pages dog-eared and annotated with frantic notes in the margins. Over his shoulders, a tattered, olive-green cloak bears the emblem of his old arcane academy—a quill crossed with a wand—now faded from exposure. His boots are practical but worn, and he carries a gnarled wooden staff topped with a cracked, amber orb that hums faintly when he casts spells, though he often eyes it warily as if expecting it to fail.

As a wizard, Matthias’s magic is precise but unreliable in his own mind, despite its effectiveness. He approaches spellcasting with the caution of a scholar, double-checking every incantation and muttering to himself about potential errors, yet his spells—ranging from fiery blasts to intricate illusions—often work flawlessly, much to his astonishment. His lack of trust in magic stems from years of study gone awry, and he treats every successful casting as a small miracle, often followed by a sarcastic quip like, “Oh, that spell works? Wow.” Despite this, his deep knowledge of arcane theory makes him a valuable asset to Bromocorah Inc. even if he’s constantly second-guessing himself.

Within the guild, Matthias’s scholarly demeanor and self-doubt create an interesting dynamic. Kilionzel relies on Matthias’s intellect for planning but grows exasperated by his hesitancy, often urging him to act faster in battle. Demit finds Matthias’s muttering amusing, teasing him about his lack of faith in magic while secretly respecting his skill. Bruno, ever enthusiastic, cheers Matthias on with shouts whenever he casts a spell, which flusters Matthias but also boosts his confidence. Chrizz constantly tries to borrow Matthias’s spellbook for “research,” only to be met with a protective glare, while Oriwrick bonds with Matthias over their shared love of crafting, often helping him repair his staff. Ilmryn appreciates Matthias’s analytical mind, often seeking his advice on magical matters, while Airish, impatient with his caution, pushes him to take risks, which he does reluctantly. Liriell’s optimism baffles Matthias, but her encouragement helps him see the brighter side of his abilities.

Matthias’s role in Bromocorah Inc. is as the resident magical scholar, providing arcane support and strategic insight, though his lack of trust in his own magic often leads to over-preparation and last-second improvisation. He’s the one the group turns to for obscure knowledge or to decipher ancient runes, but in battle, he’s a wildcard—capable of incredible feats when his spells work, which they almost always do, despite his doubts. His journey with the guild is one of learning to trust not just his magic but also himself, finding confidence through the camaraderie of his teammates while proving that even a skeptical wizard can be a hero.
