After a disorienting week meandering through the dense, bewildering paths of the Delan Woods, the adventurers' spirits were momentarily lifted when they spotted black smoke curling up from behind a hill. Curiosity propelled them forward to discover the source of the smoke—an overturned wagon smoldering from an apparent arson attempt. The area around the wagon bore signs of a struggle: scattered food and building materials, bloodstains, but no bodies. Among the chaos, they uncovered a letter addressed to Char-Iz, the wizard of Myrandil. Opening the letter revealed nothing but a blank sheet of paper. The adventurers decided to hand-deliver the letter to the wizard himself. Upon entering Myrefall, the adventurers were immediately struck by the sight of a towering wizard's tower, constructed of bright red bricks, which starkly contrasted with the wooden buildings of the rest of the village. They were greeted by Char-Iz himself—an old man with a long gray beard and a flowing blue robe—who, upon seeing the adventurers with the letter, ushered them inside. The adventurers relayed the tale of the attacked wagon, prompting Char-Iz to hire them on the spot. The roads had been safe for years, and this disruption was alarming. He offered 75 gold pieces per person for them to investigate the incident and track down Peyter.
Guided by tracks leading north into the forest, the adventurers followed a path that ended at a small cave entrance in a hill. Venturing inside, they were ambushed by kobolds. A fight ensued, but the adventurers managed to fend off the attackers. Deeper within the cave, they found Peyter, who, despite his initial reluctance to accept help, urged the adventurers to clear out the remaining kobolds. He insisted that his master, Char-Iz, would further reward them for dealing with the threat. After a thorough sweep through the kobold-infested tunnels, the adventurers emerged victorious. They escorted Peyter back to Myrandil, where Char-Iz, true to his word, rewarded them with the promised gold. However, the wizard's keen interest in the unsettling events offered them an opportunity for further employment. Char-Iz proposed additional compensation if they continued to assist in unraveling the mysteries at play. The adventurers agreed and settled down for the night at the local Bullfrog Inn.
