Rulf Iachome, head of the wealthy Iachome clan, is the proprietor of the Royal Mint of Melderyn in Thay. He has a license from the king to mint Thay’s coins.
The mint stands near Caer Arien so the guards can reach it with a minimum of delay. A pair of castle guards usually stand outside the door checking all who enter the building. From the front, the nondescript two-story building appears to be a typical townhouse built from random courses of local stone. The single door is heavily reinforced with iron straps and axe-breaking nails; the windows on the ground floor are shuttered. The house is covered by terra-cotta tiles and the exterior walls have a cream lime wash finish. A masonry extension is attached to the rear of the building; its carefully bonded ashlar walls are more than two feet thick. The windows here are narrow and deep, with iron cross-bars further restricting light and access. The masonry is topped with a low-pitched lead roof pierced by a large chimney.
