This is considered important, because several children of the Garden District have expressed doubts on the matter. He was found one rainy morning near an old conservatory door, wrapped in a blanket too large for him and clutching a small plush fox as if it were a royal standard. No letter was discovered. No family name was recorded. No one in the nearby streets could say where he had come from. Hazel Bramblethorn took him in before the rain had finished falling. She did not call it charity. She did not call it adoption. She simply said that some small things find their way to the correct doorstep. By the end of the week, the Garden Quarter had decided he belonged to her. By the end of the month, Robin had decided he belonged to the fox. From the City Archives Robin Bramble is a young mouse foundling living under the care of Hazel Bramblethorn in the Garden Quarter. Though no official birth record has been located, he is believed to be around ten years old. The surname Bramble was given informally by neighbours, partly because of Hazel, and partly because Robin was first found tangled in a patch of rain-soaked climbing roses near an abandoned greenhouse. He is best known for his fox mask, his small plush fox, and his sincere belief that courage can be practiced until it becomes real. Robin is frequently seen following Hazel through the gardens, carrying drawings, seed packets, broken sticks, or objects he insists may be useful later. Most are not useful later. Hazel keeps them anyway.
The Fox Mask Robin believes foxes are the bravest creatures in the world. No one is entirely sure where he learned this. When frightened, he puts on his fox mask, stands a little straighter, and announces that he is conducting an investigation. These investigations usually concern suspicious noises, unfamiliar shadows, closed cupboards, or beetles of unusual size. His plush fox is considered an essential assistant in such matters. Hazel has never corrected him on this point.
Life with Hazel No official document names Hazel Bramblethorn as Robin’s mother. No official document names her as anything else either. In practice, she feeds him, scolds him, teaches him the names of plants, mends his clothes, and knows exactly when he is pretending not to be afraid. Robin helps her in the gardens by watering seedlings, sorting seed packets, carrying small tools, and asking questions faster than most adults can answer them. He is not yet a gardener. He is not yet an apprentice. He is, Hazel says, “still sprouting.” Rumours & Quiet Speculations The City Archives contain no clear record of Robin’s birth family. This has not stopped the Garden Quarter from developing theories. Some believe he was separated from travelling relatives during a storm. Others suspect that someone left him where they knew Hazel would find him. A few older residents whisper that children sometimes appear in the Garden Quarter when the city has misplaced something important. Hazel refuses to comment on any of these claims. Robin, when asked, usually says he came from “somewhere brave.” This is not considered useful evidence, but it is considered very Robin. Known Details
