Session 45: Knowledge of the Ages

July 23, 2022

After the duel, the party returned back to Enoo's house to rest up a bit and lick their wounds. A half-elf by the name of Nafir, called the 'stableboy' by some, showed up at the home and asked if he could stay for the night. He was very apologetic, seemingly just for existing.

They discussed visiting the Grand Library of the Archwize, but in order to get in most of the group would need to sneak. Most of them turned invisible and Nafir offered to lead the way as he often snuck in to talk to the Archivist. Everyone got in without a problem.

Devinn talked with the Archivist, who at a glance seemed to be a lich. They admitted knowing about lichdom, but were in fact an earth genasi, just immortal. Devinn asked the Archivist about J'Lynh, and it was in fact the covenant that the Archivist learned from and perfected their lichdom methods for himself. The covenant used to have a hideout in the city of Adenastin, currently known as Capital, under the Spire of Brass. But after they were discovered during the war they relocated north. The Archivist explained that the gods had to gather a great following to grow in power to be able to oppose J'Lynh.

In the meantime, Arkorow was snooping around and came across a certain Ilfae Gephostos, spouse to the Archwize. She claimed to read a book a day from the Grand Library, and she did not much care for botany.

The Grand Library contained many books, maps, letters, scrolls, and an owl nest belonging to the familiar of the librarian. The party came across a few maps (a map of the old world, and a map of the Great Chain), several books (Basic Alterations, Beyond Boundaries, On Thrizur, The Rainbow Pseudo-Dragon, and The Recent Heretics Opposing the Prophecised God), a poem called 'The Heart' that sounded like a prophecy, several letters — a Case of Letters, a Letter from Arkizer to the sister of the Archwize, and one from an unknown suitor to the sister of the Archwize as well — where the Case of Letters contained letters in draconic, addressed to Ilfae Gephostos and signed 'TV' which was a great interest to Devinn Valkas.

The party learned a great many things from the Archivist:

  • The gods were initially pretty weak but started to compete with J'Lyhn for followers to prevent them from gaining critical mass.
  • Crusades were sometimes rather brutal and nasty.
  • J'Lyhn is not the same as the normal gods, cause the Covenant (the Liches) seemed to fulfill that role.
  • Members of the Covenant:
    • 'Dragon dude': fascinated with dragons and mutation, transformed themselves into something draconic and experimented and controlled dragons. Human and brutish.
    • 'Nutjob': Apparently the guy who started the J'Lyhn business. Basically, fantasy bipolar (or pathfinder Nethys, randomly destroying and creating for no reason). He was obsessed with magical power. Idiot convinced of his own superiority according to the Archivist.
  • Locations we know of they were occupied with:
