Chapter 32: Seeking out the Elemental

At Sun Rock Retreat, the party laid their plans. They knew there was a Grimtotem threat to deal with, and that the troll camp Malaka'jin would be close to where the caravan raids had happened, but their first priority was to try and find Unknown's water elemental. And so, once supplies had been gathered and all was ready, they set off on the road with a mind to solve the latter first.

They knew the journey would take them two days south, by the main roads and with their mounts, before they would then need to continue into the mountains on foot for another two days. During that first leg, the party found hoof-trails in the dirt that eventually led them to a small band of centaurs passing through. By their markings and their banners, the party recognised them as Kolkar Clan centaur -- and by their ragged appearance, and the look of the biggest, eldest among them, it was clear that something had left them rather worse for wear.

The party spied on them, tried to divine their intentions, and eventually decided to leave them be as they seemed peaceful enough. In parting, they could tell that some of the centaurs had spotted the party in turn, and appeared to acknowledge that the party let them walk away.

Eventually the party reached the point in their journey where they had to leave their mounts behind. Anything not essential to them was left behind there, and then up they went along winding mountain paths to seek out the elemental. Between Gan Jedi's tracking skills, Yuma Stonehoof's attunement to the elements, and what they had marked off on their map, they had a good sense for where to go.

Their route, however, eventually brought them to an old ravine with seemingly no easy way to cross. A hard decision had to be made; either they could find a way to cross the chasm ahead of them, or they could try to find another way around and thus lose precious time, as they did not know how long of a round-about trek they'd be forced to take.

They decided to dare the chasm, long as it was and as strong as the winds blowing through it werer. They had the means and the skills; a rope thrown across and safely secured, a careful process with one party member after the other brought across to the other side. It was not a perfect crossing, as the strong winds dared to try and sweep some of the party along with it, but in the end they all managed to make their way across safely.

It was late out in the evening, when the party reached the place where Maggran claimed to have felt the presence of the elemental, and Yuma now could feel it too. Far off in the distance there was a light, and upon approaching it they found a lone water elemental. It seemed oddly expectant. Perhaps Maggran had managed to reach through it enough that it knew to expect that potential allies would come and find it.
