Shar is the goddess of night and darkness, not only as the absence of light but also as the metaphorical darkness that dwelled in one's heart, mind, and soul. She can see every being, object, and act performed within darkness and holds dominion over pains hidden but not forgotten, carefully nurtured bitterness, and quiet revenge for old slights. She spends much of her energy battling her old nemesis, Sehanine in a war that is older than recorded time. She is the creator of the Shadow Weave.

In religious artwork, Shar was depicted as a darkly beautiful elven or human woman with long raven-black hair and clad all in black, swirling attire. She also has been depicted as having had black- or purple-hued skin and shown with a cowled cloak that flowed into shadows. Her eyes were large and haunting, and were solid purple with pupils as black as coal and reflecting the void at the dawn of time, and when she smiled it was cold as night. When visiting mortals in dreams, her dark hair would move and swirl regardless of gravity or outside forces, such as wind.

When she appeared in person, Shar had two avatars that she favored. The first was the Nightsinger, a figure standing over 10 feet (3 meters) or even 12 feet tall, shrouded entirely in a vast cowled cloak that disguised her figure and flowed into all shadows and areas of darkness around her. She wore a mask of feathers of every kind, which concealed her face and disappeared into the dark depths of her cowl. Never simply speaking, she sung her every word with sounds of sorrow and loss, forming a song that was at once heartbreaking and hauntingly beautiful. It compelled listeners to obey her every command or else to stand helpless with despair.

Her other avatar was the Dark Dancer, appearing as a woman 7 feet in height and with a lithe, dancer's build and divinely beautiful. With little attire, her skin was black as jet but sparkling with starlight, while her eyes were dark and hypnotic, capable of projecting magic that could help or harm in equal measure. Her dance was graceful and beguiling, even erotic, and her sensual performance and suggestive stares were enough to make any mortal fall down and obey her.

Some elves believe that Shar and her sister Sehanine are responsible for the creation of the elven races. Others claim she is responsible for the creation of all things that rise from the darkness. Mother Dark (as the eladrin call Shar) is a stern and forbidding mother that purposes to gather her children back into her welcoming arms as she returns the cosmos to an everlasting cool and silent darkness, ruled by her and her favored children.

Dogma

While not all elves desire darkness to rule over all, many do pay respect to Mother Dark in her role as a creator and protector. Other faithful, to include some shadow elves and shadow fae, whole heartedly embrace her ideals, and work under the cover of night to subvert established institutions. Human worshippers and followers of Shar have greatly increased in recent years.

Many of her followers pursue practical goals of advancing the power of the priesthood and of Shar’s worshipers while avoiding direct opposition of other faiths (except that of Sehanine). The clergy of Shar work to overthrow governments, promote Shar’s patronage of avengers, organize secret cabals, and create false cults to further their ends.

Tenets of the Faith

  • Reveal secrets only to fellow members of the faithful.

  • Never follow hope or turn to promises of success.

  • Quench the light of the moon (agents and items of Sehanine) whenever you find it, and hide from it when you cannot prevail.

  • The dark is a time to act, not wait.

  • Consorting with the faithful of good deities is a sin except in business dealings or to corrupt them from their beliefs.

  • Obey ranking clergy unless it would result in your own death.

Servitors

I am nothing. I am the empty room. The dreamless sleep. The shadow's shadow. There was no pain before my sister set the sun aflame. Now you exist to suffer until you find your way back to my embrace. - Shar
