Lady Sjel

The Most Honourable; the Illustrious; Lady / Mistress of Sun's Splendour, the Embracer, the Guiding Star, the Mother-of-Pearl
NPC

Lady Sjel is an Oceanid Queen in charge of the northern portions of the Ebissian Sea, specifically the waters around Cynosure – where her seat is located – and the Garland.

As the Embracer, Sjel accepts all things discarded and abandoned, offering them a new chance to belong and be beautiful. Usually, this includes various pieces of flotsam, shipwrecks, driftwood, sea glass, and similar objects, which wash ashore in her domain. A talented artisan, she fashions these remnants into art, decorating with them Cynosure in general, and its Tower of Glass specifically. However, Sjel is known to extend this courtesy to living creatures as well. There is speculation that a lot of the members of her Court were offered such favour, after being exiled or shunned from elsewhere.

Operating from the Tower of Glass, her lighthouse-palace, she is called the Guiding Star by seafaring Fey. She is also the Lady of Sun's Splendour, though her rivals are quick to point out that her sun is false. As the Mother-of-Pearl, she leads the Pearlescent Court.

The Pearlescent Court

Lady Sjel is ranked as a Margravine at Aseron's Court, with Duke Asculith as her direct superior, though the two don't belong to each others' Courts. Due to the former's aloofness and lack of desire to involve himself in politics and court affairs, Sjel instead finds herself answering directly to his brother and her suzerain, King Aseron, more often than not.

Her own Pearlescent Court consists of Niloufer, Velapuri, Dellingr, Nymanne, and many other minor attendants and nobles.

- Dewdrop Jellies are a common sight at the Court, serving either as Familiars, pets, or unusual decor.

GM Notes

Cynosure

- The rumours are true; each and every member of the Pearlescent Court was "embraced" by Sjel.

  • Sjel welcomed Lady Malyson after she was shunned by her family and other Fey courtiers. Malyson stayed at the Pearlescent Court for some time, before joining Lord Asculith's crew.
  • Velapuri was appointed as a guardian of the portal to Creation's Forge by other Jyoti, and even though she has faithfully and diligently conducted her duties, she is for some reason unable to visit her home Plane for prolonged periods of time. She is tight-beaked about this apparent exile, and Sjel accepted this seemingly abandoned outsider as a member of the Court.
  • Niloufer left the Plane of Water willingly, but was unable to find his new place in other worlds. He was content with wandering around, but once Sjel offered him a place at her Court, he settled down.
  • Niloufer rescued Dellingr from the yoke of the Efreeti empire, and she accepted the latter's service when they both arrived to Cynosure.
  • Sjel might not be aware of all the circumstances surrounding Petryk, but she still sensed his many troubles, and suggested that Velapuri took him as their understudy.

- Sjel has an unusual appetite for berries; luckily, Niloufer is an expert gardener, and grows a wide variety of them for her.

- Sjel values natural beauty far above glamours and enchantments, however impressive or skillful. She seeks to accentuate this beauty wherever she sees it, including the objects she collects.

- An occasionally insufferable pedant at heart, Sjel is known to micromanage her attendants, which they grew used to. Her attention to detail and insistence on things being just-so borders on unhealthy.
