Backstory | Mortimer Blackwell was once a promising student of arcane and occult studies. Unfortunately, he possessed the sort of curiosity that professors tend to describe as dangerous rather than academic. He was fascinated by ancient rituals, primordial magic, sacrificial rites, and the boundaries between the mortal world and whatever lies beyond it. Eventually, he crossed one of those boundaries. The details of the incident are unclear. Mortimer himself is reluctant to discuss it, and the records of his academy are rather conspicuously incomplete.
What is known is that he emerged covered in ritual scars and arcane tattoos, while rumours that something from beyond the mortal planes had taken residence within him quickly spread throughout the city. In the weeks following the incident he gradually lost his abilities to dream, concentrate, and cast spells and ultimately resulted in the loss of his accreditation as student as well as his sidejob as hedgemage and diviner forcing him to leave the Dreamlands to make a living somewhere else.

Nowadays | Mortimer makes his living in the fighting pits of Goblin Town, where his considerable size and unnerving appearance have made him a surprisingly successful pugilist. Between bouts, he earns coin reading palms, laying cards, and offering dubious advice to the superstitious. He doesn't claim to be a medium, though he remembers enough occult lore to make one wonder whether that distinction matters.

Blackwell's Parlor | A small room above one of the quieter streets near the Red Pits (Goblintown). Incense lingers in the air, mixed with the smells of ink, alcohol, and old paper. The walls are covered with shelves packed with old books, bottles of strange tinctures, pots of dried herbs, and small objects of uncertain purpose. Side tables are crowded with loose arcane notes, bottles and vials, stone mortars, half-burned candles, and brass censers slowly filling the room with smoke. In the middle of the room sits a heavy wooden table, illuminated by a hanging lantern, its surface scarred by years of use.

Note for GMs | Like any good magician, Mortimer works with his hands. If possible, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to get him an Eldritch Claw Tattoo, Wraps of Unarmed Prowess or something similar by around level 4. This would give him a way to deal with creatures resistant or immune to non-magical attacks without requiring him to abandon his unarmed fighting style. Thank you!
