The Tasman Whale is a fierce and towering subspecies of the blue whale, famed across the oceans for its size, speed, and violent temperament. Stretching up to 30 metres in length and weighing over 150 tonnes, the Tasman Whale dominates the waters of the Tasman Sea, the broad stretch between eastern Oceanyka, Tasmania, and New Zealand, though isolated populations have been sighted across the wider Pacific and Indian Oceans. Unlike its gentler cousins, the Tasman Whale matures rapidly and spends most of its life in a state of near-constant feeding, driving itself into frenzied migrations that leave trails of churned water and broken shoals in their wake. Whalers and sailors alike tell grim stories of Tasman Whales that have rammed vessels clean in two, either in blind rage or as territorial displays. Their thick, battle-scarred hides and aggressive movements have earned them a place in maritime folklore as both awe-inspiring titans and unpredictable dangers of the deep. Battles between the Tasman Whale and the Oceanykan Giant Squid have been the object of countless folkloric and contemporary stories, a true duel of leviathans.
Despite its impressive size and terrible temper, it is not a predatory animal and poses little danger to modern steel-hulled warships.
