Grove of Lost Stones

🌿 Grove of Lost Stones & Verdant Scriptorium

"Beneath the whispering boughs, the stones remember... and sometimes, they answer."

📜 Overview

Nestled just south of Ashkarin’s bustling Marketplace, the Grove of Lost Stones stands as a stubborn anomaly: a block-sized tangle of ancient trees, moss-choked stones, and deep earth scents, fenced by low, crumbling walls and hedges gone half-wild.

At its heart rises a lopsided ring of rune-marked Standing Stones—monoliths predating Ashkarin itself. Birds sing here by day, but fall silent after sunset, and the air carries an uncanny, cool stillness.

📖 The Verdant Scriptorium

"Where root and word entwine, memory becomes green once more."

Hidden under a veil of enchantment and hanging ivy near the center of the Grove, a hollowed, living tree—a titanic ancient oak whose insides have been carefully shaped rather than cut—houses the Verdant Scriptorium.

Design & Structure:

  • Exterior: Looks like a massive oak with thick bark and sprawling roots; entry is through a carved arch hidden behind hanging vines and illusions.

  • Interior: Cool, dimly lit chambers filled with living wood shelves, holding scrolls, barkbound tomes, song-crystals, and vine-etched tablets. Tiny glowing motes drift lazily through the air.

  • Access: Only those who make a proper offering (usually a personal story, a song, or a small sacrifice of memory or magic) are allowed inside by the Keeper, Caerwyn Thornmantle.

🧙‍♂️ Purpose & Lore

  • Archive of the Wild: The Scriptorium preserves songs of extinct beasts, maps of forgotten lands, recipes for vanished herbs, tales of old oaths, and the True Names of certain ancient trees and rivers.

  • Living Records: Some records are not just written but grown—living bark-runes, whispering mosses, memory-thorns that sing to those who listen.

  • Secret Meeting Place: Druids, bards, rangers, and trusted scholars gather here to share hidden knowledge, plot against blights upon the land, and protect Ashkarin from creeping corruption.

  • Watcher’s Trust: The Scriptorium is under the subtle protection of the Verdant Keepers and fiercely hidden from the Tower Arcana (Arcantower) and the Overlord’s agents.

🧑‍🌾 Key Figures

Caerwyn Thornmantle

(N Male Human Druid 12, Circle of the Verdant Vigil)

  • Role: Master of the Grove and its archives. Guardian of old ways.

  • Personality: Stoic but kind; his wisdom is measured and deep as the roots he protects.

  • Secret: Holds a forbidden ritual within the Scriptorium capable of sealing planar breaches—or perhaps even opening them wider.

Duskclaw

Huge Black Bear (Dire Bear)

  • Role: Guardian of the Grove.

  • Special Quirk: Seems able to detect lies and hidden malice; glows faintly silver when near ancient magic.

🕯️ Atmosphere

By day, the Grove is peaceful, its Scriptorium filled with rustling parchment and the smell of green things.
By night, under the silent gaze of the Standing Stones, the very air seems thick with memory—words half-heard, songs half-remembered, paths half-seen leading into the dreaming dark.

Those who trespass without respect risk being forgotten—vanished from memory by the vengeful roots of the Grove itself.

🌟 Customs and Access

  • Offerings Required: A personal memory, a crafted song, or a truth never before spoken aloud.

  • Seasonal Rituals: The Scriptorium holds Equinox Gatherings, when rare knowledge is shared and ancient rites performed beneath the stars.

  • Forbidden Lore: It is whispered that Caerwyn keeps scrolls in the Scriptorium that detail the primordial tongue of the stones themselves—knowledge that could reshape the Druid Gates... or destroy them.

🧩 Adventure Hooks

  • A Lost Memory: A bard seeks to recover a forgotten song hidden within the Scriptorium’s Living Tomes, but something stirs dangerously within the texts.

  • The Stolen Seed: An agent of Tower Arcana seeks to steal a sapling from the Grove—one said to be a living conduit to the Seeping Waste’s hidden heart.

  • Corruption Beneath: On certain nights, a black rot weeps from one of the stones, whispering in an unknown tongue; Caerwyn fears something ancient has awoken beneath Ashkarin.

🗿 The Standing Stones (Druid Gates) — Reminder

The Grove’s monoliths remain central, now more intertwined with the Scriptorium’s fate than ever:

  • Teleportation Paths: For druids, rangers, and bards who know the ancient rites.

  • Summoning Beacons: To call or banish spirits tied to Ashkarin’s destiny.

  • Unstable Openings: Occasionally, gates open at random, spilling dreams—or nightmares—into the Grove.
