⚔️ Alder Brandt, Castellan of Ember Bastion
“Stone crumbles. Fire fades. But if one soul stands against the dark, then we have not lost. Not yet.”
🎖️ Knightly Virtues & Role
As a lawful Knight of the old code, Alder Brandt embodies not just martial discipline, but a deeper, quieter order—a man who holds fast while the world splinters around him. His oaths were not made lightly, and none were made for love.
-
Sworn to No Liege: Once a noble of Ashkarin, Brandt cast aside his vassalage after a bitter war and now serves only the Bastion and the Flame. No banner flies above him but the dull red of wardfire.
-
Burdened Stewardship: He holds power not for glory, but because someone must. He has buried too many brothers-in-arms, including Cem Derel, to trust easily—or love openly.
-
Respected by All, Trusted by Few: The Wardens of St. Ras, Disciples of Vaughn, and even Ashkarin’s generals treat Brandt as a neutral force of law. But within the Bastion walls, some whisper that his silence masks guilt deeper than duty.
🧱 Personality & Description
Rugged and solemn, Brandt’s presence is a forge after the fire—a structure scorched and scarred, but still standing.
His iron-grey eyes miss nothing, and though he rarely speaks more than needed, each word lands like a hammer.
-
Armor: Dented half-plate bearing the seven-rayed star of Vaughn at the breast, and the sigil of St. Ras scorched into the pauldron—no house crest, no claim to nobility.
-
Shield: Old, battered, painted red with wardfire paint—worn thin near the grip from use, not display.
-
Manner: Speaks in blunt declarations. Hates ceremony. He’d rather dig a trench than sit a council.
He keeps Kerem Derel at arm's length, raising him with discipline but never affection, believing that if he allows himself even a moment of fatherly warmth, the dam will break. He watches Solenya of the Fifth Dawn—the Bastion’s mage—with wordless regret. What they had, if ever anything, was left unspoken the day Cem died in Stonehell.
🕯️ Ember Bastion – His Hold
Alder Brandt holds Ember Bastion not as a reward, but as a necessity—a firebreak against the dark. From here, he commands a fractured fellowship of faithful, fugitives, and fighters drawn by principle, not pay.
-
Garrison: The Bastion Guard—a mix of soldiers, stablemasters, and priestly defenders loyal only to the Bastion. Brandt’s law is the only law here.
-
Followers: Not drawn by glory, but by gravity. Veterans, clerics, and monster-hunters serve him because they see in him something enduring.
-
Legacy: The Bastion must outlast him. But with no heir, no family, and no declared successor, the stone’s future is uncertain—even as he trains Kerem with a father’s eye he refuses to admit.
