The Bastion Guard
“Stone beneath, fire within.”
The Bastion Guard is not a single company of soldiers, but a complete martial and logistical force—the living backbone of Ember Bastion. Formed of veterans, scouts, stablemasters, quartermasters, scribes, siege engineers, magicians' aides, and even smith-priests of Vaughn, the Bastion Guard maintains order both within the keep’s ash-stone walls and across the perilous marches beyond.
Commanded ultimately by Captain Alder Brandt, the Guard is structured in layered watches, lances, and posts, each focused on a specific domain of defense or daily operation. While the guard maintains a formal military chain of command, Ember Bastion’s isolated nature demands flexibility, and many within the Guard wear multiple roles—a cook may also be a sling expert; a scribe may take a night patrol on the east rampart.
Common Divisions Within the Bastion Guard:
-
The Wall Watch – Soldiers stationed on the Bastion’s ramparts, gatehouse, and towers. They brave howling mountain winds and siege drills with equal stoicism.
-
The Iron Table – The quartermasters, smiths, and armorers who ensure weapons are sharp, stores are tallied, and equipment repaired.
-
The Marchers – Mounted scouts, runners, and outriders who monitor the surrounding passes, ravines, and roads—first to see what stirs beyond.
-
The Inner Post – Guards within the keep proper: mess halls, chapel, mage tower, library vault, and infirmary.
-
The Ember Stables – Handlers and animal trainers under the command of Kerem Derel, responsible for the Bastion’s mounts and those of visiting adventurers.
-
The Flame Cell – A small detachment of magically inclined aides and arcane wardens under the guidance of Solenya of the Fifth Dawn, who assist with defensive enchantments and respond to arcane threats.
Uniform & Colors:
While not rigidly uniformed, members of the Bastion Guard are marked by the red field patch—either on cloak, armor, or shield—representing wardfire, the magic of enduring flame. Officers bear the seven-rayed star of Vaughn, the Bastion’s patron, worked into their armor or cloak pins.
Reputation:
The Bastion Guard is known across the region as a grim but capable force, fiercely loyal to the Bastion and its ideals. They are fewer in number than their reputation implies—but better trained, better led, and utterly unwilling to abandon their post. To serve in the Guard is to accept cold, silence, and duty—but also honor.
