Storm giants, are the descendants of Ymir, the greatest and most terrible of the Stormbound Elementaris who roamed the world during the Frst and Second Ages of Creation. Ymir, whose mighty storms and thunderous wrath shook the heavens and sundered the earth, was a force of nature unmatched by any other. The destruction wrought by Ymir and his kin was so great that the elder gods, in their desperation, sought to bring order to the chaos by casting down the titans. However, from the remains of these primordial beings, the first true giants were born, and among them, the Storm Giants stood tallest and most revered.
Despite their descent from the destructive Storm Titans, Storm Giants are often benevolent beings who act as the guardians of the world. Their immense power is tempered by a deep wisdom and a sense of responsibility to protect the realms of mortals from the chaos that once nearly consumed the world. They reside in the most remote and unseen corners of the world, where they can carry out their sacred duties without interference.
One of the most ancient and revered civilizations of Storm Giants is Utgard, a grand kingdom founded in the depths of the Abythis sea trench. Hidden within the crushing depths of the ocean, Utgard was established thousands of years ago to protect the seas from the malevolent presence of the World Eater Serpent, a monstrous titan-spawn of Nieznane that lurked in the abyssal darkness beyond the undersea kingdom. The Storm Giants of Utgard have long maintained a melodic chorus, a hauntingly beautiful song that resonates through the deep waters and keeps the World Eater Serpent's influence nullified. This continuous hymn is a powerful form of Weave-Rifting, a magic passed down from Ymir himself, ensuring the safety of the world from this ancient threat.
Storm Giants are the tallest of the true giants that remain on the Material Plane, towering at a full 26 feet (7.9 meters) in height and weighing approximately 15,000 pounds (6,800 kilograms). They possess an awe-inspiring presence, their immense size matched only by their commanding intellect and noble bearing.
There are two distinct ethnicities of Storm Giants. The most common have pale, light green skin, dark green hair, and eyes that seem to glow with the power of the storms. A rarer subset of Storm Giants, however, have skin of a deep violet hue, with dark blue hair and silver eyes that shimmer like lightning on a stormy night. Both types of Storm Giants are known for their fine tunics and belted sandals, though they sometimes favor scale mail when they choose to don armor.
Their bodies are impervious to harm from lightning and thunder, including the powerful breath weapons of blue dragons. In fact, Storm Giants are capable of generating and throwing bolts of lightning themselves, striking targets at distances of up to 500 feet (150 meters). This ability, combined with their immense strength, makes them some of the most formidable beings in existence. It is said that sightings of lightning bolts streaking across mountain peaks or over the ocean are often the work of Storm Giants, channeling their innate power.
Storm Giants are among the most intelligent and respected of the giant races. They are known for their wisdom and their ability to foresee events through omens and the patterns of storms. They often serve as protectors of the natural world, ensuring that the balance of the elements is maintained and that the destructive forces of the titans do not return to the world.
Despite their power, Storm Giants prefer to live reclusive lives, far removed from the wars and struggles of mortals. They dwell in isolated castles atop storm-swept peaks, beneath the sea, or within remote mountain ranges, where they can observe the world from afar. Their solitude is a reflection of their nature—aloof and distant, yet always watchful.
In addition to their role as guardians, some Storm Giants possess the ability to mark and claim a mortal humanoid as a sea spawn. This is done either by cursing the individual or making a pact with them, binding the mortal to the will of the Storm Giant. These sea spawn are often seen as protectors of the seas or emissaries of the giants, carrying out their will among the mortal races.
While Storm Giants have inherited the power and grandeur of Ymir, they have chosen a different path from their progenitor. Ymir, in her primordial fury, sought only to destroy, but his descendants have chosen to protect and preserve the world from the very chaos that gave them life. The Storm Giants' connection to their elemental roots remains strong, and they continue to embody the raw power of the storms, but they do so with a sense of purpose and duty that distinguishes them from their titanic ancestor.
In their secluded realms, the Storm Giants keep vigil over the world, ever watchful for signs of impending chaos. Their melodic chorus in Utgard continues to resonate through the Abythis Sea Trench, a testament to their commitment to keeping the world safe from the ancient threats that still linger in the darkness.
