Through this system, the Ascendancy maintains continuity of leadership, strategic dominance, and ideological cohesion spanning millennia. Its sigil, a phoenix, represents continuity through preservation rather than rebirth in a spiritual sense.
The Ascendancy controls a broad swathe of star systems radiating outward from the Aurelion Sector and maintains influence through indirect governance, technological leverage, and selective intervention rather than mass occupation.
Origins & History
The Ascendancy originated in the Aurelion Sector, centered on the planet Aurelion, the first known world to develop memory mark technology to maturity. Early Aurelios society used marks initially for archival continuity and governance succession. Over time, the technology became the foundation of a new political class—the Ascendants—who rejected biological mortality as an inefficiency rather than a limitation.
Following Aurelion’s ascent to technological supremacy, nearby systems were incorporated rapidly through political subversion and negotiated submission. Rather than overt conquest, Ascendant operatives embedded marked individuals into existing planetary leadership structures, allowing transitions of power to occur with minimal resistance. This method became standard practice during the Ascendancy’s expansion phase.
As the empire expanded eastward, contact with regions affected by Khaos influence forced a strategic shift from expansion to containment. The construction of large-scale defensive and observational megastructures marked the transition from imperial growth to imperial preservation.

The Ascendancy is stratified along both political and ontological lines.
At its apex is Ascendant Aurelion, the original architect of the memory mark doctrine and the symbolic and functional center of imperial authority. Beneath him exists the Ascendant Aristocracy, composed primarily of pureblood Aurelions—individuals whose lineage traces directly to the founding core of Aurelion society and who retain preferential access to stable biological or custom-engineered bodies.
Operational governance is carried out by Marked Councils, whose members are rotated across bodies and roles to prevent ideological drift. Military and industrial command positions are frequently occupied by Ascendants housed in synthetic bodies, particularly in high-risk installations.

The Ascendancy’s philosophy is rooted in continuity, control, and insulation from external influence. Biological life is viewed as a temporary carrier state, while memory marks are considered the true seat of identity and authority.
The empire does not pursue racial purity in governance or citizenship; species diversity is tolerated and often exploited. The sole exception is the Ascendant aristocracy, which maintains internal lineage controls to preserve ideological alignment with Ascendant Aurelion.
Khaos is regarded not as an enemy ideology but as a systemic threat to ordered reality. The Ascendancy’s long-term objective is not eradication of Khaos—which it considers impossible—but containment, prediction, and mitigation. The irreversible nature of synthetic embodiment is accepted as a calculated cost in service of this goal.
Significance & Connections
The Aurelion Ascendancy occupies a critical geopolitical position. It borders:
- Echelon Corporation space to the northwest, with which it maintains a close trade and logistical alliance.
- The Shroud of Valryn to the southeast.
- The Shadow of Aurelion to the northeast, an uncharted region monitored primarily through the Eye of Aurelion.
- The Far-Fringes to the east, where a major Khaos Rift and the mutable physics region known as The Flux pose persistent threats.
The Ascendancy relies on Echelon industrial output for non-core resource acquisition and tolerates limited cooperation with the Black Meridian Syndicate when strategic necessity outweighs reputational cost.
Historically, the Ascendancy has fought multiple wars with the Halcyion Federation over control of the Axis Hyper-Lane. These conflicts have ceased under a fragile peace agreement, maintained largely through mutual exhaustion and external pressures from Khaos-affected regions.
