Straphangers

The Straphangers: Scouts of the Iron Guard

The Straphangers are an elite scouting unit of Seregon’s Iron Guard, known for their daring jungle patrols and their use of dinosaur mounts. Stationed near the outskirts of the city, they serve as a critical first line of defense, navigating the dense, dangerous wilderness surrounding Seregon and handling minor threats before they reach the city. Their mission is to monitor and secure the region’s borders, gathering intelligence on potential dangers while avoiding direct conflict with larger or more dangerous enemies.

Purpose and Operations

The Straphangers specialize in scouting and reconnaissance, patrolling the outskirts of Seregon’s territories in the jungle. Their primary objectives are to:

  • Monitor threats: Keep watch over beastmen tribes, rogue undead, and other minor threats that roam near the city.
  • Capture zombies: Secure zombies for the creation of Seregon Serum, a key resource in the city’s medical and alchemical research.
  • Avoid superior foes: Steer clear of more dangerous entities, such as powerful jungle creatures, hostile tribes, or deep jungle horrors that the more specialized units, like the Telum Druids or the Ithosian Talons, are better suited to handle.

The Straphangers maintain a delicate relationship with the Nosgar Tribe, a group of powerful jungle-dwellers. As long as the Straphangers respect the territorial boundaries of the Nosgar, they are permitted to operate within their own patrol zones, which are rich in threats but do not provoke larger conflicts with the jungle's powerful forces.

Structure and Roles

The Straphangers operate as a fast-moving, lightly armed force, built to survive in the harsh environments of the jungle while avoiding direct confrontations with large-scale threats. Their dinosaur mounts give them mobility and allow them to quickly traverse dangerous terrain.

  • Patrol Leaders: Each squad of Straphangers is led by a seasoned Patrol Leader, often a veteran of the jungle who knows how to navigate both the political and natural dangers of their environment. These leaders maintain discipline and ensure the Straphangers stay focused on their objectives without getting dragged into unnecessary skirmishes.

  • Scouts: The majority of Straphangers are expert scouts, trained in jungle survival, stealth, and reconnaissance. They use their knowledge of the terrain to identify threats long before they become problems for Seregon, reporting back vital intelligence to the Iron Guard.

  • Zombiemancers: A handful of Straphangers are Zombiemancers, specialists in the safe capture of zombies for harvesting. They are not necromancers in the traditional sense, but they know how to handle and restrain the undead using traps, specialized equipment, and containment spells that make it possible to bring zombies back to Seregon for serum production.

Role in Seregon's Defense

While the Straphangers aren’t built for full-scale battles, they play an indispensable role in Seregon’s layered defense system. Their constant patrols and early warning reports allow larger military forces like the Iron Guard and The TelumDruids to focus on greater threats without worrying about surprise attacks or smaller incursions. The Telum, in particular, are respected for their connection to nature and handling more powerful jungle adversaries, but their strength lies in dealing with larger threats, leaving the day-to-day skirmishes and scouting to the Straphangers.

The Straphangers are known to coordinate with other military and security forces when necessary:

  • The Iron Guard: As part of the Iron Guard, they report directly to the higher echelons of Seregon’s military. Their intelligence helps plan defense strategies and determine when larger forces should be mobilized.
  • The Telum Druids: The Straphangers have a working relationship with the Telum Druids, though there is a clear divide in their duties. The Telum prefer to focus on high-level threats that disrupt the natural order, leaving the jungle patrol and minor threats to the Straphangers.
  • The Ithosian Talons: These deep jungle operatives, dealing with the most dangerous threats in the uncharted territories, view the Straphangers with some disdain, seeing their missions as less critical. However, the Talons begrudgingly tolerate their presence, knowing that the Straphangers serve a valuable purpose in preventing minor threats from escalating into major ones.

Relations and Politics

The Straphangers find themselves navigating the complex social dynamics within Seregon’s military and the wild jungle tribes. Their relations with other groups range from pragmatic alliances to uneasy tensions:

  • Nosgar Tribe: The Straphangers are cautious to respect the borders of the Nosgar Tribe’s lands, knowing that overstepping would lead to fierce retaliation. The Nosgar, though powerful, tolerate the Straphangers as long as they stay in their designated patrol areas.
  • Ithosian Talons: The Talons often see the Straphangers as meddling in areas they shouldn’t be, believing the Straphangers are more a nuisance than an asset. However, they recognize that the Straphangers’ intel can occasionally be useful in warning of lesser threats.

The Seregon Serum

One of the Straphangers' most important roles is capturing rogue zombies for the creation of Seregon Serum, a powerful alchemical substance used by the city. While the serum has various uses, including the treatment of diseases and wounds, it requires the raw material of undead flesh. This task is dangerous and requires the Straphangers to master the art of capturing zombies alive—without becoming their next meal.

  • Zombie Hunts: Zombie hunting patrols are carefully planned, with specialized equipment designed to immobilize the undead. These missions are risky but vital to the city’s continued supply of the serum, and the Straphangers are uniquely equipped to handle this grim task.

Tactics and Strategy

The Straphangers are known for their hit-and-run tactics. They rarely engage in direct confrontations with large threats and instead focus on gathering information, rescuing stranded citizens, and capturing zombies for Seregon’s needs. Their dinosaur mounts allow them to move quickly, evading larger beasts and covering large areas of the jungle in a short amount of time.

Their motto is one of cunning over brute force—they never bite off more than they can chew. If a threat proves too dangerous, they retreat and report back rather than engaging, allowing Seregon’s heavier forces to deal with the problem. This strategic restraint keeps the Straphangers alive and ensures they can continue their important work.

The Name and Reputation

The Straphangers are named after the straps that dangle from their distinctive leather saddles, which carry their gear, zombie containment tools, and other necessities for jungle survival. Their name has become synonymous with daring, resourcefulness, and perhaps a touch of recklessness, as their missions take them to the wild and dangerous edges of Seregon's territories.

Despite their lower rank in Seregon's military hierarchy, the Straphangers are well-respected for their expertise in jungle warfare and their vital role in the city's layered defense. They may not be the elite warriors that the Telum Druids or the Iron Guard are, but without the Straphangers, Seregon would be far more vulnerable to the constant dangers lurking in the jungle.
