Story: Powderkeg

Festival of Canals, usually a time of celebration and revelry in Seregon, has taken on a tense and dangerous atmosphere. The streets, normally filled with the laughter of children and the melodies of musicians, now hum with the strained energy of a city on the brink of violence.

In the heart of the festival, near the Old Knot District, a group of ragged, desperate poor has cornered a few richly dressed Regents. The air is thick with the smell of sweat and simmering anger. The poor, faces hardened by years of neglect, shout and jeer, demanding answers for the crumbling defenses of their district, defenses that have failed them time and again. The Regents, normally insulated from such raw emotions, are visibly shaken, their pale faces betraying their fear as they attempt to placate the crowd with empty promises.

Nearby, a small contingent of Red Wizards of Rasar, dressed in their crimson robes, stand rigid with barely contained fury. Their eyes are locked on a group of Immortals of Karsis, the dragonborn mercenaries who once laid waste to their homeland. The air between them crackles with tension, as memories of loss and devastation rise to the surface. The wizards' hands twitch toward their spell components, while the Immortals grip their weapons more tightly, their eyes narrowing as they sense the brewing conflict.

In a darkened alley just off the main thoroughfare, a towering Teosian Barbarian suddenly freezes, his eyes narrowing as he catches sight of a figure moving through the crowd. It's a Crimson Slavers, the man who had once torn his family away in chains. Rage surges through the barbarian like a wildfire, his muscles tensing as he begins to push his way through the throng, his gaze locked on his prey. The slaver, unaware of the imminent danger, continues to weave through the crowd, his movements slick and practiced.

At the same time, the Guardians of the Nine, a group of priests clad in simple, yet elegant robes, have gathered near one of the city’s many statues. Their serene faces are marred by deep concern as they notice a small group of Cult of Dagon cultists, their eyes wild and glazed, murmuring incantations under their breath. The cultists' spell is subtle, but its effects are starting to ripple through the crowd. People are becoming more agitated, their tempers flaring over minor provocations. The priests sense the dark magic at work and quickly begin to form a protective circle, their voices rising in a chant to counter the spell.

Unbeknownst to all, an occult symbol has been stealthily carved into the cobblestone street in advance, hidden beneath the bustling feet of the crowd. Its presence is insidious, a silent invitation to chaos. The cultists await the inevitable bloodshed, their eyes gleaming with anticipation as the tensions in the square rise to a fever pitch.

The scene teeters on the edge of catastrophe, with each group poised to strike. The city’s festive decorations, bright and colorful, seem out of place amidst the growing hostility. As the first blow is about to be struck, a single drop of blood falls onto the cobblestones, and the symbol hidden beneath the feet of the crowd begins to glow faintly. The city of Seregon, once united in celebration, is now a powder keg, ready to explode.
