Lost City of Nirnaeth

Overview

Overview The Lost City of Nirnaeth sprawls across a horseshoe-shaped valley encased by verdant jungle-clad hills. Its layout reflects the deliberate and harmonious design of the ancient janni architects, their mastery of magic and geometry evident even in the city’s ruin. Though time and nature have reclaimed much of the city, its essence endures in fractured marble streets, overgrown plazas, and crumbling edifices that whisper tales of its glory and downfall.

Its layout reflects a delicate harmony of elemental influences, with new names reflecting air and water alongside fire. Though time and nature have claimed much, the city’s design and cultural essence endure in its foundations and ruins, telling a story of brilliance overshadowed by hubris.

Historical Significance

Nirnaeth was an extraordinary blend of mystical prowess and worldly advancement, a society devoted to both knowledge and prosperity. Yet its greatness was undone by internal strife. A devastating civil war, compounded by a dark and enigmatic curse, tore apart the janni's society. The city fell into ruin 585 years ago, the same year modern Seregon was founded, leaving behind a legacy steeped in mystery and sorrow.

City Layout

  1. The Furnace District (Core)

    • Description: The central hub of Nirnaeth, with concentric rings emanating from a large, sunken courtyard where the Palace of Evaporating Mists once stood. The once-glorious palace is now a crumbled monument, its elemental essence faintly lingering in the air.
    • Features:
      • The Veil Well: A deep basin that once emitted a perpetual mist, symbolic of air and water’s interplay. Now cracked, it occasionally releases faint puffs of vapor.
      • Large braziers, once used for elemental rituals, stand as silent sentinels of a bygone age.
    • State of Repair: Mostly destroyed; only the skeletal remains of structures remain.
  2. Official Districts

    • Structures:
      • Zephyr Guard Barracks: A partially intact building with curved arches designed to resemble flowing wind. Decorative motifs of clouds swirl across its walls.
      • Pillars of the Storm: A grand hall where administrative councils once gathered. Only three of the original nine pillars remain upright, etched with elemental sigils for wind and rain.
    • State of Repair: Collapsed roofs and shattered walls; some hidden chambers below ground are preserved.
  3. Residential Districts

    • Description: Surrounding the core, these districts feature a mix of crumbled homes and narrow alleys, many overtaken by jungle vines and waterways that have reclaimed the land. These were homes for both janni and their human subjects.
    • Features:
      • Tiny fountains once powered by magic now trickle with rainwater.
      • Decorative wind chimes hang from trees and ruins, producing eerie melodies in the breeze.
    • State of Repair: Foundations and fragments of walls persist, but few buildings are intact.
  4. Religious Districts

    • Structures:
      • Skyreach Pavilion: A domed structure dedicated to the element of air, its gilded roof now tarnished but still reflecting sunlight through the treetops. Inside, murals depict winged janni ascending to the heavens.
      • Mosque of Shifting Tides: Perched on the bank of a now-dry river, its curved spires once symbolized the flowing currents of water. Intricate mosaics of blue and silver tiles decorate its weathered facade.
      • Sanctuary of Whispers: A tranquil shrine devoted to the interplay of air and water, with statues of serene janni blowing faint breezes over a ceremonial pool.
    • State of Repair: Parts of the Skyreach Pavilion and Mosque of Shifting Tides remain intact, though the Sanctuary of Whispers is nearly consumed by the jungle.
  5. Market and Artisan Districts

    • Description: This district lies east of the core, its open plazas now tangled with vines and rubble. The market once celebrated the elements of water and wind with open channels and vented ceilings.
    • Features:
      • Aquifer Forge: A water-powered forge where artisans crafted magical items. Its massive water wheel is broken, but fragments of enchanted tools remain.
      • Stone stalls and channels suggest the sale of water-themed trinkets, such as glass vials and mist-catchers.
    • State of Repair: Severely degraded, though some aqueducts and carved basins are functional, collecting rainwater.

Cultural Influences

  • Elemental Duality: The janni revered the balance of air and water alongside fire, reflecting their philosophy of harmony. Structures and decorations celebrate this elemental interplay, such as flowing carvings, wave-like patterns, and soaring arches.
  • Integration of Subjects: The human influence is evident in simpler designs, depicting practical use of elements, such as rain-catching basins and wind channels, blended with the janni’s more ornate styles.
  • Mysticism: Symbols of Atlach-Nacha are subtler in air and water themes, often resembling intricate webs woven into storm and wave motifs. These designs hint at the janni’s failed experiment to connect the Dreamlands with the Material Plane.

State of Repair

  • General Condition: The city is a fragmented relic of its past, with air and water elements now reclaimed by rain and the jungle. Intact structures still emanate faint elemental magic, offering glimpses of the janni’s lost majesty.
  • Hazards: Crumbling walls, hidden waterways, and traps designed to channel air and water into defensive measures pose challenges to intruders.

The Lost City of Nirnaeth emerges as a blend of air, water, and fire motifs, a place where forgotten majesty lingers amid decay. It beckons explorers to uncover its secrets and tread lightly over its hallowed grounds.

Notable Structures

Cloudspire Plaza

Description: A central plaza with concentric stone patterns resembling ripples and wind currents. In its center stands a shattered spire, once imbued with the power of storms to summon rain and wind.

State of Repair: The spire is broken, but fragments hum with faint elemental magic.

White Ziggurat of Atlach-Nacha

The White Ziggurat rises like a silent sentinel amid the ruins of Nirnaeth, its once-pristine marble sides now cloaked in vines and moss, blending into the jungle-covered hill it has become. From a distance, the ziggurat appears as nothing more than a natural feature of the landscape. Up close, however, the faded, smooth surfaces of white stone betray its true nature.

Sacred Caverns of Moz

Nestled beyond the ruins, this cavern lies along a stream that winds up a jungle-shrouded hillside. The cave mouth beckons with its dark promise, said to hold remnants of the janni's downfall. Within may lie treasures, forbidden knowledge, and the lingering echoes of the curse that destroyed Nirnaeth. The cave’s ominous reputation ensures that few, if any, venture into its depths unprepared.

Ruthazek: The Gorilla King and the Dread Herald of Van Droth were defeated here by the Sentinels of Seregon.

Mador Kheb and the temple guard of the Temple of Set - Rockport were seen entering the Sacred Caverns of Moz.
