In Seregon, the Ziggurat of Zoth-Ommog stands as a dark and foreboding relic of an ancient past, a structure the city would rather forget, yet one they cannot afford to ignore. The ziggurat is said to be the prison of Zoth-Ommog, the third son of Cthulhu, an entity of unimaginable power, sealed beneath the seabed by the Elder Gods themselves. To suppress its malevolent influence and to deter any foolish attempts to unlock its secrets, the city authorities made a drastic decision: they built the Lighthouse of Valka directly on top of it.
The Lighthouse, a towering beacon guiding ships safely into Seregon’s harbor, serves a dual purpose. On the surface, it’s a symbol of the city’s prosperity and its mastery over the treacherous seas. Beneath, however, it’s a constant reminder of the lurking danger beneath the waves. Hidden within the lighthouse are small, secret passages that lead down to the ziggurat, where the city’s priests must annually descend to refresh the wards. This ritual is both a sacred duty and a grim necessity—these wards are the only thing keeping Zoth-Ommog’s ancient power contained and preventing cultists from breaching the prison.
The priests, chosen for their unwavering faith and strength of will, must squeeze through these claustrophobic tunnels, feeling the oppressive weight of the ziggurat’s dark history pressing in on them. They know that failure in their task would mean the release of an unspeakable horror upon the world, one that could spell the end of Seregon—and perhaps, all life.
The ziggurat’s presence also explains the mysterious migration of the Spawns of Ubb to Seregon. These foul, otherworldly creatures are drawn to the ancient structure, clinging to it like barnacles on a ship’s hull, only to burst in the sunlight, leaving a trail of decay and death in their wake. The city’s leaders hope that by maintaining the wards, they can at least stem the tide of these abominations, if not stop it entirely.
In Seregon, the Lighthouse of Valka is both a guardian and a grave marker, standing vigil over a secret that many wish could be buried forever, but one that must be confronted again and again, lest it rise to consume them all.
