Varrick Deepdelver

Varrick Deepdelver – The Ambitious Prospector

Occupation: Prospector, Cousin of the Walraven Family
Background: Grew up far from the family’s central wealth, working in lesser mines

Physical Description:

Varrick Deepdelver is a young, scrappy dwarf, though by dwarven standards, his early 30s still mark him as a bit wet behind the ears. He stands a little shorter than average, his frame leaner than most dwarves, but his wiry build speaks to his life of hard labor in the mines. His ruddy complexion and calloused hands are telltale signs of someone who’s spent his days underground, and his clothes—a patchwork of worn leather and sturdy cloth—are perpetually dusted with dirt.

His dark brown hair is cropped short, with a few unruly tufts peeking out from under his well-worn miner's cap. His beard, though respectable by dwarven standards, is shorter and less maintained than one might expect, more out of practicality than pride. Light brown eyes, framed by a few worry lines, gleam with a restless energy, as if he’s always looking for the next opportunity.

Despite his disheveled appearance, Varrick has an air of determination about him. His mouth is often set in a slight scowl, though it quickly shifts into a grin when discussing his grand plans. He may be down on his luck now, but anyone who knows him can see he’s ready to grab the next chance that comes his way—at any cost.

Personality and Ambitions:

Varrick is a man of ambition, driven by a hunger to escape his current state of poverty and finally claim a slice of the Walraven wealth. Unlike his cousins, who have long enjoyed the comforts of fortune, Varrick grew up on the outskirts of the family empire, working the less glamorous mines and scraping by on small jobs that kept him on the fringes of prosperity. He’s bitter, though quietly so, about being left out of the family’s major ventures, and he’s determined to change his fate.

When the opportunity to purchase the rights to Sunstrike Hollow Gold Mine fell into his lap, Varrick didn’t hesitate. It was a backroom deal with Asbera Walraven, a well known cousin. This his first real opportunity to own something substantial within the family’s reach. To him, the risk was worth it. After all, Sunstrike Hollow has been abandoned for years, and the rumors of riches still hidden in its depths are too tempting to ignore.

His ambitions are straightforward: he wants to find gold, strike it rich, and finally earn a seat at the family’s table. Varrick dreams of the respect and prestige that would come from reopening the mine and proving it still has wealth to offer. He imagines turning heads at family gatherings, no longer seen as the distant cousin who could barely afford to scrape together a living. Instead, he wants to be the prosperous, respected dwarf who pulled the Walraven family’s forgotten venture back into the spotlight.

Motivation:

Varrick is broke. The small amount of gold he scraped together to buy the rights to Sunstrike Hollow represents nearly all his savings, and he’s painfully aware that if this venture fails, he’ll be left with nothing. His pockets are empty, but his mind is brimming with ideas on how to turn this forgotten mine into his ticket out of debt.

He’s motivated by more than just wealth, though. Varrick craves recognition—to prove to his wealthier cousins that he’s just as capable of success, even if he had to take the risks they avoided. For Varrick, reopening Sunstrike Hollow isn’t just about the gold; it’s about claiming his place within the Walraven legacy, earning the respect that’s always felt out of reach.

Relationship with the Walraven Family:

Varrick’s relationship with his Walraven cousins is complicated. Though he’s a member of the family, he’s always been on the outside, watching as his more fortunate relatives thrived. His deal with Asbera wasn’t exactly above board, but Varrick doesn’t mind; to him, it’s just business. He’s determined to show the rest of the family that he can stand on his own, even if it means getting his hands dirty.

He resents the privileged position of some of his cousins, particularly those who had access to the best opportunities without having to fight for them. Varrick sees himself as a self-made man—or at least, he will be, once Sunstrike Hollow pays off. At the same time, he still feels the pressure of family expectations, wanting to prove himself within the Walraven circle but also determined to do it on his terms.

Personality and Traits:

  • Ambitious: Varrick is fiercely driven, always looking for ways to climb out of his current situation and secure a better future.
  • Optimistic: He tends to look on the bright side of even the most dangerous situations, believing that luck and perseverance will see him through.
  • Inexperienced: Though he’s worked in mines before, Varrick is still young and lacks the experience to truly understand the risks he’s taking.
  • Naive: His eagerness to strike it rich blinds him to the potential consequences of his actions. He often underestimates the challenges ahead.
  • Charismatic: Varrick has a natural charm, and despite his lack of funds, he can easily convince others to join him in his ventures.
