Physical Description
A dagger on the sea, The Crimson Heron was built for speed, evasion, and impossible maneuvers. Its hull is a seamless blend of voidwood, ghostpine, and layered arc-metal—a combination too costly for a legally registered cutter. Its lines are aggressive and refined, with a swept prow capped by a sculpted crimson heron in full dive.
Her sails are spun from Ethersilk—translucent, strong as steel in the wind, and capable of catching aetheric currents when charged by the Core Crystal housed below deck. At night, when electrified, the sails shimmer like lightning-struck gossamer and leave behind trailing ripples across the aether.
Trim crystals run along the keel and sides, glowing faintly as they stabilize the vessel in choppy waters and allow sudden changes of direction with unnatural grace.
Below deck, humming with constrained energy, is the crystal heart of the ship.
Propulsion and Etheric Systems
-
Core Crystal:
Recovered from a wrecked Consortium drift-engine, the crystal is volatile but immensely powerful. It draws etheric current from the surrounding atmosphere and feeds power through the ship’s systems—energizing the sails, stabilizers, and cannons.-
Housed in a reinforced sigil-carved cradle and monitored obsessively by Engineer Karsin Windforged.
-
Originally from the The Walraven Consortium, Karsin is a brilliant dwarf whose designs were too unstable for Consortium standards.
-
He's also a notorious drunk, prone to "tuning" the crystal during episodes of rage or inspiration. The crew knows to avoid him when he's "chasing the pulse."
-
-
Ethersilk Sails:
Vast, glassy panels that become weightless when charged. They allow the ship to ignore conventional winds and sail directly along leystream currents. They glow with eerie brilliance when the core is pushed to full charge. -
Trim Crystals:
Rare and temperamental, these crystals can neutralize pitch, yaw, and roll, allowing the ship to make turns no sea vessel should survive. Said to have Consortium markings still etched faintly into their frames.
The Crew
-
Captain Marek Vasant – Once hailed as a rising star of the Sky-Naval Aerofleet. He commanded the Bitter Duke, an experimental airship loaded with advanced surveillance arrays and long-range mapping spellwork. It crashed near Stoneclaw Beacon, and Vasant alone emerged from the jungle after two weeks—half-mad and wrapped in half-burned flightcloth.
Rumors say he sold classified sky charts to slavers operating out of Ren Sharr, which led to the Bitter Duke’s ambush and destruction. Vasant has never denied the claim. In fact, when asked, he simply says, “The stars lead where they will.”
-
Karsin Windforged – Engineer. Consortium exile. Drinker of volatile spirits, both literal and magical. Prone to engaging the crystal when angry, which occasionally results in minor temporal shifts or static ghosts in the hold.
-
Silje “No-Tongue” Belmire – First Mate. Knows more about knives and semaphore than any three other sailors combined. She answers only to Marek—and possibly something in the hold that doesn’t like lantern light.
-
Tavian "Red" Marrow – Albino lookout and "shimmer-watcher." Claims to see ether disturbances before they manifest. Frequently mutters about “clocks in the sky” and “the ship that follows ours, but backward.”
Controversy & Notoriety
The Heron is well known in shadowports from Tarab to the Cham Marches, frequently seen running illegal spelltech, salvaged Consortium weaponry, and unmarked passengers of unusual origin.
Its suspected ties to the Bargemasters Guild—a black-flag organization operating out of Rockport’s salt-haunted tunnels—have led to multiple failed attempts by naval agents to capture or disable the vessel. It has slipped every net, and worse, is believed to have bribed or blackmailed at least three customs officers in Seregon.
Captain Vasant remains a wanted man in three jurisdictions, though none have managed to land a formal charge. His crew is fiercely loyal—or perhaps simply terrified of him.
Campaign Locale: Stoneclaw
On the Kerkhof Route, five days upriver along the Locantis River from Helderdink—or seven days by foot from Seregon through overgrown jungle and vine-choked ruins—stands a natural marvel called Stoneclaw.
A jagged, 300-foot spire of rock reaching skyward from the jungle canopy, Stoneclaw is topped by a roaring beacon of enchanted flame that never extinguishes. Smoke constantly issues from its crown.
The Nosgar Tribe worships the spire, believing it to be a “tooth of the old world” left behind by the sky-gods. Small caves dot its surface—many of which hold old runes, bones, or forgotten altars.
It was near here that the Bitter Duke was seen falling in fire. The site is now taboo to the Nosgar and rumored to be haunted. Strange pulses of light have been spotted on moonless nights.
Some say The Crimson Heron returned to Stoneclaw once, under no flag, and did not come back down the river for three days.
