🐍 Crannog the Broken Oath
Warlord of Redstone Island, Tyrant of Oenach, Herald of Crom
✦ “He sailed the sea for kings, until he learned what they were.”
Crannog is a name spoken half in awe, half in warning—a relic of ancient bloodshed and new cruelty. He is the eternal ruler of Oenach, self-declared “Sovereign of the Tinvaal Reborn,” and a man many believe to be more spirit than mortal, a creature hardened by exile, betrayal, and divine fury.
In whispered circles, Crannog is referred to as a Tuatha exile, or perhaps the last child of Crom, the death-god of stone and storm. Once a good-hearted sailor, he traversed the known world aboard The Onyx Star, guiding and advising kings with wisdom and sea-lore. But when he opposed the corruption of the Phoenician kings, he was mutilated, disgraced, and cast into exile.
They thought they’d broken him.
Instead, he broke the world around them.
🧱 Current Role: Tyrant of Oenach
From his fortified capital in Oenach, Crannog rules with brutal discipline and divine mandate. His law is enforced by the Magpies, a network of black-clad tax collectors, spies, and enforcers. He brooks no dissent—villages that resist him are enslaved, razed, or left as offerings to Crom, bound to stones and left for the wolves.
Crannog seeks to reestablish the Tinvaal, the ancient assembly of island powers—but not as a council of equals. He envisions a centralized rule, with himself as High Chieftain, and all others as vassals. To this end, he has built Fort Balladoo, an ominous garrison south of Laxa, meant to enforce obedience through proximity and pressure.
Despite his outward brutality, Crannog speaks with the tone of a philosopher—calm, unhurried, reasonable. He believes tyranny is mercy, and the world must be reshaped by force to survive the chaos to come.
🧠 Creature Type
While he appears mortal, Crannog is not entirely human. Some say he is a cursed firbolg, others a storm-warped druid, others still a sea-wight made flesh. His true form, rarely glimpsed, is said to have serpentine eyes, barnacle-spined shoulders, and a voice that carries thunder across the water.
"His face bears the knife’s kiss, but his soul is the sea’s revenge." – A Laxan elder
⚔️ Crannog’s Powers and Influence
-
Divine Ties: Crannog is a devotee of Crom, the old god of stone, sky, and doom. Through ancient rites, he channels Crom’s power to predict storms, bind undead, and summon forces of ruin.
-
The Onyx Pact: The wreck of his old ship, The Onyx Star, lies beneath Oenach’s throne-room, and serves as a powerful reliquary. Some believe it is the source of his binding magic—or a beacon for deeper sea forces, such as sahuagin or leviathans.
-
Control through Tribute: Towns like Laxa pay heavy tribute to avoid conflict. A third of local wealth is siphoned by Oenach through taxes or tithes. Another third vanishes into Magpie corruption.
-
Cults and Infiltration: Crannog once served Van Droth as a benefactor. Now they are rivals, though Crannog still operates alongside figures like Ravana—when their aims align. He views Ravana as a child playing at tyranny.
🛡️ Opposition and Conflict
-
Tara: The only settlement to openly defy Crannog. Their militia and shipwrights have halted his shipbuilding efforts with cunning resistance. The Heroes of Tara have thwarted several incursions.
-
Laxa: Appeasement outwardly, resistance in the shadows. Laxa seeks alliances with Tara and others, but pirates, undead armies, and monstrous threats make such travel perilous if not suicidal.
-
Elgar (Elven Enclave): Openly resists Crannog’s demands but offers no military aid. They fear Crom’s power, and believe Crannog may awaken something older beneath Redstone.
🐍 Symbol and Appearance
Crannog’s personal crest is a twisting black serpent coiled around a broken oar—symbolizing his rejection of servitude to mortal kings. His armor is made of sea-glass and scale, etched with the names of Phoenician kings he burned. His voice is quiet, almost reverent, until it cracks like splitting stone when invoked in battle.
He wears no crown—only a ring of driftwood and bone, carved in ancient ogham runes, said to bind his soul to The Onyx Star.
