Spell scrolls contained a mystical cipher of magic that released when the caster read the words on the page. They were penned by Spellcasters and generally could only be read by those who had studied the same type of magic as the author.
Unlike Spellbooks, spell scrolls carried an innate magic that made them easier to cast from. Once a spell scroll's magic was released, the scroll crumbled to dust.
