Phyracress was a modest fishing town set on one of the few broad stretches of flat land in the Fencrest Foothills, where the mountains eased back enough to meet the Bay of Broken Tides. Low stone buildings and weathered timber homes clustered near the shoreline, their roofs salted white by years of wind and spray. The harbor was shallow but serviceable, lined with small piers and drying racks rather than grand quays, and most of the town’s wealth came from fishing boats that worked the bay’s rough waters. A day east of Cliffsunder by foot, the town lacked the opulence of its westerly neighbour, and was considered by most to be little more than a thoroughfare.
Despite its quiet character, Phyracress held importance as a stop along the Common Path. The road passed directly through the town, carrying caravans and messengers between Cliffsunder and the wider reaches of Commona, and this traffic sustained a handful of inns, warehouses, and stables near the road’s edge. Merchants rarely lingered, but goods were often transferred from ship to wagon or vice versa, giving the town a steady if unglamorous flow of coin.
