Felak-Zigil, known in Common as the Border-Breaker, was an Epochal Artifact which anchored the kingdom of Skypeak to the Ethereal Border. The battlehammer drew on the Ethereal, thought to be linked directly via a planar Leyline, without ever depleting itself. A gift to the ancient Dwarven lords of Skypeak from the Azure Paragon, the artifact appeared as a grand Mithral hammer. Its head converted the flow of ethereal energy into force, spectral flame, and will, with its ghostly fire visible only where the veil between worlds thinned.
When struck against stone or an anvil, the Border-Breaker could reinforce reality or break down its rules. Phasing, teleportation, incorporeal movement, and possession became dangerous or impossible within its domain. During sieges it was used to raise invisible bulwarks, turning aside engines of war and unraveling hostile magic. Armies approaching the upper passes towards Skypeak often found themselves stopped as if the mountain itself rejected them. In battle, each blow discharged compressed ether with the force of avalanches. Targets were crushed and partially displaced from the material plane, fortifications shattered, tunnels collapsed, and magical constructs erased. Full releases were rare, for they risked thinning the barrier between worlds.
Felak-Zigil also shaped objects made using it for creation, as tools forged with it partially existed in both the material world and the Border. Weapons and armor were unnaturally light yet nearly indestructible, striking incorporeal foes as if solid and resisting magical decay. Gates, core structures, and other works of Skypeak were said to have been forged with the hammer resting on the anvil, shaping reality around it, though its power was forbidden to be used unless the kingdom was in dire need.
The hammer’s existence ensured Skypeak’s sovereignty for millennia. Its presence discouraged war, forced treaties, and shaped continental politics. Rumors of it being moved were enough to halt campaigns, and no neighboring power could threaten the kingdom without an artifact of similar magnitude.
