A residence, a workplace, and an unresolved argument

What People Know

The Tower of the Turning Page stands in the Ember Ward of Kalorand, near the High Fang Gate, across the street from the magic shop of Zorika Velashni.

It is the home and workplace of Vaseth Kal-An, sometimes called Vaseth of the Margins, a name he does not care for.

The tower is not grand. It does not loom or threaten. Most people walk past it daily without thinking about it. Those who need it remember exactly where it is.


Reputation

Everyone agrees on a few things:

  • Vaseth lives there.

  • Apprentices come and go.

  • Nothing done inside is officially sanctioned.

Vaseth regularly identifies magic items for Zorika Velashni, especially unusual or foreign pieces. Sometimes he buys such items himself, particularly those that do not fit neatly into known categories. Items acquired by Vaseth tend to disappear from circulation.

The Church tolerates the tower. The Watch avoids lingering near it. Certain people from the lower wards know how to knock.


The Name

The tower is called The Tower of the Turning Page.

No one remembers who coined the name. Vaseth did not.

Inside, books are rarely finished. Notes trail off. Margins are crowded. Conclusions are penciled lightly and often crossed out. Nothing feels final.

Vaseth once remarked, to no one in particular, that pages do not turn themselves.


Exterior

A narrow, cylindrical stone tower of several stories, capped with a modest observatory rather than a dramatic spire. The door is plain, iron-banded oak. There are no sigils, runes, or warnings on the exterior.

The absence is intentional.


What Visitors Commonly See Inside

The Threshold

A small receiving chamber with a bench, a table, and a bell no one rings. Visitors are usually acknowledged without needing to announce themselves.

The Turning Hall

A tall interior space filled with lecterns, rotating frames, and suspended manuscripts. Pages hang from cords. Diagrams overlap. Nothing aligns quite the same way twice.

This is where discussions tend to begin and end.

The Library

Shelves of competent but incomplete books. Multiple copies of the same work sit side by side, heavily annotated in different hands. Margins often carry more ink than the original text.

Visitors are encouraged to read the notes before the book.


The Observatory

The top floor is Vaseth’s observatory, though it has little to do with stars.

The walls are covered in cork. Into them are driven pins. Between the pins stretch strings of different colors, forming a dense, overlapping web.

  • Names, symbols, dates, and locations are pinned in clusters.

  • Lines connect events that should not be connected.

  • Some strings are cut. Others trail off unfinished.

  • Nothing is labeled as true or false.

It looks like a conspiracy board to outsiders.

Vaseth calls it “a working draft.”

Those who stare too long often feel they are seeing patterns they cannot yet articulate.


The Apprentices

At any given time, Vaseth keeps six apprentices:

  • Three are 3rd-level magic-users

  • One is 2nd-level

  • Two are 1st-level

They are not formally inducted. They are not promised advancement. They are not given a curriculum.

Vaseth teaches by pressure, contradiction, and refusal to resolve questions too quickly.

Apprentices leave when they think they understand him.

They always regret it years later.


What Vaseth Does Not Do

Vaseth does not lecture.
He does not provide certainty.
He does not explain the world.

He asks questions. He reframes problems. He lets people test their ideas and live with the results.


Why People Seek the Tower

People come to the Tower of the Turning Page when:

  • an answer is correct but useless

  • an explanation fits too well

  • a pattern refuses to break

  • an item does something it should not

Vaseth will not tell you what to think.

He will make it harder for you to think the same way again.


What Everyone Understands

The tower is not a dungeon.
It is not a safe place.
It is not hostile.

If violence happens here, it will not go unnoticed.

If you leave having learned something, it may take years to understand what it was.

A reskinned Cursed Tower of the Astromancer

Defensive State:

  • Guards and Wards is active after hours or when Vaseth is absent and apprentices remain inside

  • The tower is well known to the Veiled Hand. Theft here carries consequences


1. Portal of Turning Leaves

(Portal of Stars)

Twin iron-banded oak doors set with shallow carvings of overlapping pages, some erased, some rewritten. These are the only easy access to the tower.

  • Doors are Wizard Locked while Guards and Wards is active

  • Under the wards, mist spills just inside, limiting visibility to 10’

  • Anyone forcing entry triggers a Magic Mouth:

    “You are already being noticed.”


2. The Threshold Hall

(Entry Chamber)

A circular chamber with a stone bench, a lectern, and a bell that does not ring.

  • The bell alerts apprentices silently if touched by an unknown visitor

  • One exit is disguised as a blank wall when Guards and Wards is active

  • All directions feel subtly wrong due to the confusion effect


3. Hall of Incomplete Arguments

Tall lecterns display rotating diagrams, suspended pages, and half-finished treatises.

  • Marginal notes contradict the main text

  • Reading for more than one turn causes mild disorientation

  • This is where visitors are often made to wait

Defense:

  • Dancing lights appear and drift ahead of intruders, never behind them


4. Apprentice Commons

(Servants’ Hall)

A long worktable, chalkboards, and mismatched chairs.

  • Six apprentices use this space

  • Notes are deliberately left unfinished

  • Nothing here is valuable

If disturbed after hours:

  • Apprentices retreat upward and seal stairways


5. Apprentice Cells, Upper

(Lesser Chambers)

Three small rooms belonging to the 3rd-level apprentices.

  • Spellbooks are chained

  • Personal items are mundane

  • Doors are Wizard Locked under Guards and Wards


6. Apprentice Cells, Lower

(Student Quarters)

Cramped rooms for the 2nd- and 1st-level apprentices.

  • Messier, more personal

  • More likely to contain experimental notes

Defense:

  • Stairs above and below are filled with regenerating webs


7. The Library of Margins

(Main Library)

Shelves of annotated books, duplicated volumes, and conflicting scholarship.

  • Marginalia outweighs original text

  • Removing a book triggers no magic

Consequence:

  • Theft here is noticed socially, not magically

  • The Veiled Hand will learn within days


8. Vaseth’s Study

(Astromancer’s Study)

Spare, quiet, almost monastic.

  • Desk, chair, lamps

  • No spellbook

  • No obvious valuables

Illusion:

  • One wall is a false door while wards are active


9. Vault of Distillations

(Astromancer’s Vault)

Small, heavily warded chamber containing:

  • Foreign magical curios

  • Partial artifacts

  • Items bought from Velashni that “didn’t fit”

Defense:

  • Stinking Cloud fills the room if entered without permission


10. Tome Vault

(Grimoire Vault)

Wizard Locked. A small, heavily warded stone chamber, climate-stable and unnaturally quiet. Shelves are set into the walls, each holding a single book, chained but not locked. There are no labels.

These are true grimoires, not spellbooks. Each is a magical object in its own right.

Total Value: approximately 50,000 gp, though this valuation assumes buyers who understand what they are looking at. Most do not.

Book of the Hideous Frog

A wide, frog-faced grimoire bound in damp frog flesh that subtly wriggles when handled.

Grimoire Effect:

  • Each night, 1d6 live frogs spawn in the owner’s clothing or belongings

  • Vaseth tolerates this. Others rarely do.


Conjuration of Smoke and Flame

Spells:
Burning hands, fireball, fly, magic missile, pyrotechnics, stinking cloud, wall of fire

A charred cedar-bound tome, perpetually licked by flame yet never consumed.

Grimoire Effect:

  • Can ignite flammable objects by pressing the book against them

  • The soot stains everything it touches permanently


The Song of the Hound and Panther

Author: Granston, Monster Zoologist
Language: Common

Spells:
Blink, charm monster, dimension door, haste, mirror image, slow

Bound in swirls of black and tan fur.

Grimoire Effect:

  • +2 to reaction rolls with warp beasts and blink dogs

  • These creatures will not fight each other while the book is present


Tome of the Careful Crawler

Author: Harfv, Adventuring Wizard
Language: Common

Spells:
Detect invisible, feather fall, light, protection from evil, shield, tongues, water breathing

Hardwood and brass binding, heavily annotated.

Grimoire Effect:

  • Light spells cast on the book have double duration

  • Can be used as a bludgeon (1d4 damage)


Tome of the Puppeteer

Author: Bren, Marionetteer
Language: Elvish

Spells:
Charm person, hold person, invisibility, levitate, phantasmal force, pyrotechnics, shocking grasp, unseen servant, ventriloquism

A ragged tome wrapped in wire. When opened, it hovers as if suspended by strings.

Grimoire Effect:

  • Targets of charm person cast by the owner suffer –1 to their save


Defenses

  • Wizard Lock on the vault door

  • Stinking Cloud triggers if entered without Vaseth’s permission

  • Removal of any grimoire triggers social consequences, not alarms

    • Within days, the Veiled Hand knows

    • Within weeks, no reputable wizard in Kalorand will deal with the thief

Vaseth does not hunt book thieves.
Others do.


11. Treasure Vault

(Material Holdings)

A reinforced chamber containing Vaseth’s liquid assets, carefully limited. He does not hoard wealth here.

  • Suggestion triggers on forced entry:

    “You already have enough.”

Vaseth keeps most of his true wealth in institutions, favors, and obligations, not here.


12. Observatory of Patterns

(Upper Observatory)

A large, circular chamber beneath the tower’s capstone. This room is far larger than expected, taking up the entire upper level.

The walls are completely covered in cork.

Into them are driven hundreds of pins. Between the pins run strings of different colors, forming a dense, overlapping web that spans the entire room.

What Is Visible

  • Names, dates, symbols, and locations

  • Trade routes crossing cult sigils

  • Foreign petals linked to local events

  • Lines cut deliberately, ends left dangling

  • No labels indicating truth or falsehood

Some connections are years old. Others were added recently.

Vaseth refers to this room as “a working draft.”

Effect

Anyone who studies the room for more than 1 turn must save vs. Spells or suffer mental fixation:

  • –1 to initiative and surprise for the next hour

  • Referee should describe a lingering sense of almost understanding

This effect is not magical in the usual sense. Dispel Magic has no effect.

Defenses

  • Guards and Wards mist limits visibility

  • Web-filled stair below isolates the room

  • Gust of Wind triggers if intruders attempt to linger too long without permission

Vaseth does not stop people from seeing this room.

He assumes those who do will misunderstand it at first.
