Bretan Caine is the little brother of Ratyn Caine. He grew up in a dysfunctional home with an abusive father. His sisters worked hard to protect him from the worst of it,
allowing him a sort of innocent obliviousness to the harshness of life
in his home. However, once they had left the household, and especially after Ratyn's departure, he saw more of what kind of person his father was. Despite his struggles, he worked hard for a better future for himself, and to find a way to protect his mother.
Bretan joined the local village militia before turning the civil war, quickly gaining respect for his piercing intellect and his capability at analysing a fight and making adjustments to the formation. On his 19th birthday, he and his militia received a draft notice to the king's army to fight the usurper. He led a group that refused to join, opting to stay in Whitlington to help defend it instead, causing strife in the village.
He currently lives in the village barracks, working on contingency plans should the fighting spread out to the province.
