Tobren Mirethane is the personal household servant of Overseer Borrik Valecairn, a role that should not exist in a brutal mining outpost but does anyway because Borrik Valecairn insists on living like some frontier lord in a private keep rather than a company stronghold. Tobren keeps the overseer’s residence clean, beds turned down, lamps filled and lit, fires banked, coats brushed, boots polished, meals laid out, and every domestic detail handled with near-religious care.
He is a dwarven man with a twisted spine, uneven shoulders, and a heavy, lurching gait that makes him instantly memorable. His face is weathered, solemn, and strangely gentle. There is something almost cathedral-like about him: quiet, dutiful, half in shadow, always present where needed and gone again before most people think to thank him. Around the stronghold he moves like a ghost with a broom, a keyring, and a candle-lantern.
Many at Hollow King Claim pity him. Some mock him behind his back. Most are unsettled by how completely and sincerely devoted he is to Borrik Valecairn comfort and household order. Tobren does not seem to care. In his heart, service is not humiliation. It is purpose.
