the Giants' Forest

The majestic trees that tower over the south-eastern edge of the Inis separating the lands of the Tailté na Gréine peninsula cast long, yet almost serene, shadows across the forest known as Doan Toor. One of the few things that remain named in the original Fwoarian tongue Doan Toor is one of the only truly verdant places left on the Inis. Amid its immense boles do small fey and woodland beasts passively play, hunted only by those large cats, wolves and Fwoarians that stride the open spaces between the dark towers above. Such a place bares need of protection and those Fwoarians and their skilti compatriots refuse development upon these magnificent trees, protecting their raw beauty and timeless might regardless of whoever might claim dominion of the land the woods sit upon.

Geography & History

Geography

Doan Toor fills the area south of Low Muck, east of the Bulthron Delta and north of Tailté na Gréine. Its largely flat and the forest is open growing thick only at its central most region. Most of the forest is easily navigated as trails wind lazily between the massive boles and trunks of the redwoods and pines that grow there with small brooks ebbing from the delta and the moors down to the verdant fields of Tailté na Gréine.

History

Doan Toor existed, presumably, even in the Age of Winter as a great boreal forest. With the advent of the Age of Spring it grew only more immense and fecund. Fwoarian tribes would frequently make small homesteads and south of the wood. There once were even a few hamlets and inns. It was treated with great respect by the Ardruids and often referred to an untouched garden of the primordial Inis.

However, at the end of the Age of Summer, even Doan Toor could not remain unspoiled by the darkening of the Inis. The sudden flood of humans to the southern Inis saw many of them try and force their way onto land originally owned by the Fwoarians and as Manannan Port grew the need for lumber grew with it. In late AoA 2662 there was a small war fought for control of Doan Toor and the immense natural resources it held. The Fwoarians and skilti that sided with them eventually ended the war in early AoA 2663 at the Battle of Bolersbough, but the war took a toll on the outer edges of the forest.

Since then, the Fwoarian tribes that call the area home protect the forest with violent, almost fanatical devotion with legends speaking in hushed tones of a cult to the Toor's heart, an immense crown of trees at its center, whom sacrifice mortal lives to continue the flow of living energy into the great forest.

Ecosystem & Species

Ecosystem

Small herds of deer and a myriad of forest animals make the grounds below the immense trees home. Most if not all the endemic life is benign with only wolves and lynxes preying on the local wildlife. Even the fey here border on friendly, if a bit puckish.

Doan Toor is ever verdant, with its towering branches blotting out most weather patterns save for the very edges of the woods. Only the drizzling rain and whispers of distant windstorms manage to make their way into the dark heart of the forest. Winter sees the trees heavy with snow which can sometimes crash to the ground in heavy avalanches sending unfortunate folk to the ground under its weight. Throughout the year there is a heavy fog that creeps in among the towering trees and their slithering roots all but obscuring the ground from view.

Flora & Fauna

The most impressive species of flora in Doan Toor is the mighty red-hued titans that tower up into the skies above. These Dark Towers, as the locals call them, are incredibly ancient and many of the tribes that live near them claim they were young only when Trynnalta was new. Smaller trees , mosses and ferns fill the gaps and blanket the forest floor in between these mighty titans.

Many species of animal shelter in this enclave of nature's majesty. These include slugs, giant salamanders, and newts, along with raccoons, bobcats, pine martens, black-tailed deer, elk, murrelets, and giant owls. Bevulfs sometimes make their way here and raise their young among the misty ferns. Primordial fey and spirits are often caught luring the unwary into traps for their ravenous hungers as well.
