Bulthron Delta

The Misty Hills

All the rivers of Inis Mona run through the mired and dark lands of the Bulthron Delta. Trees, gnarled and rotting, veiled in the drab gauze of hanging mosses block line of sight beyond more than a few yards. A low hanging mist that seems to flow with the tepid waters of the marshy delta obscures all that slithers and crawls on the ground. This swampy morass dominates the northern delta before it turns into the aptly named Low Muck.
South of that are the brackish moors, their pale reeds and craggy rocks never betraying the ravenous creatures crawling through them. Here is a place where the very ground swallows the unwary into a silent, watery grave never to be seen again. A fetid, yet lush, moor where even the plants can kill those amateur explorers that find themselves floating along brackish waters.
The Bulthron Delta is a darksome swampland, clear cut only by the rivers themselves broken by its evil climes. At its center is a great lake of pooling brown waters and a small city nestled on the bosom of an island with tall walls to keep the night out.

Geography & History

Geography

By and large the Bulthron is a delta in name only as its where the major rivers of the Inis break up and release their waters into the Crescent Bay. The vast majority of its southern climes just south of Ynis-Gwysrin are a brackish moor over flowing with both tepid waters and bot flies. Here the most dangerous creatures are the Fwoarians, second only to the coiling river serpents and followed closely by the all ravenous giant otters.

North of Brenn Logh, in which the vast artificial island that Ynis-Gwysrin rests upon is situated, are the rotting woods and sprawling swamps of the Midden Mire that ring the southern edge of Six-Bridges and eventually slip into the Low-Muck. The hanging mosses and misty grounds hide all manor of terrible things here in the bleak swamps.

Overall the Bulthron is a place many wish they could avoid and yet the rivers all pass through it into the Crescent Bay. It is a harsh and poisoned land that only the raucous Fwoarians could ever possibly become acclimated to. Yet their strong legs see them stride tirelessly across its scraggy and broken hills forever looking for war or to the hunt.

History

Its claimed that the Bulthron has always belonged to the Fwoarians. They built Ynis-Gwysrin over Brenn Logh and from their have they always reigned. War comes readily enough to all places, but there is no more terrible a place to fight a war than the Bulthron. Countless of the Fwoarians enemies have discovered this. Starting with the Unseelie in the age of endless winter.

Even the Ardruids for all their might found that resting the Fwoarians from their moors was a trying and taxing endeavor. While they were eventually successful in conquering the Fwoarian tribes, they lost many to the terrain alone. It was only at the Battle of Mel Hagga, a hill just northwest of Brenn Logh, that they were finally able to deal sufficient damage to the Fwoarians amassed horde. When the Fwoarians finally did break, the Ardruids could not give chase lest they lose even more men to the mire.

Then came the Age of Autumn and the War of Spears. Hundreds more were lost in the treacherous terrain as the forces of Manannan Port attempted to take land from the Fwoarians. When they first attacked the green fields of Tailté na Gréine they thought it easy. Then man marched into Doan Toor where they met fierce opposition in a strange forest that seemed to rail against their very existence. Finally, when they came to the Bulthron the men of Manannan came to know true suffering. Miles of clinging morass. Men slipping into mud that consumed them greedily. Disease, poison and the Fwoarians. Veterans of that war came back disease ridden or maimed and none has dared to attack the Bulthron since.

Ecosystem & Species

Ecosystem

The ecosystem of the northern Bulthron is a nightmarish cavalcade of giant insects, waterlogged undead and festering beasts with mouths dripping of venom. The only safe course through them is by Carachs on the rivers and even then safety is unassured as massive river serpents roil through the cold depths. Young kraken, drawn by conflict, are not unheard of floundering their way up river.

In the southern delta the dangers are closer to the ground. The moors are a mire of sucking mud and hidden water pits. One could cross the delta with a companion, and in some places, blink only to never see their friend again as they are seemingly swallowed by the earth. Virulent and poisonous plants hide in the brush here. Some capable of causing blisters at just a touch, and other causing wasting sicknesses. Plague ridden insects are also not uncommon, bearing an irritating sting that ends in boils and death.

While both ends of the Bulthron are alive with the trilling of countless insects, the rush of flowing water and the crackling of things shifting through the under brush in the spring and summer. In the winter they are blanketed under heavy snow fall and the waters of the moors and swamps freeze solid. This is generally considered the safest time to cross the moors on foot.

Flora & Fauna

Countless insects of various sizes and lethality. Giant centipedes, humongous mosquitoes and the ever fearsome hound-spiders.

Plants of heather grow here, as well sundew and cranberry. Sphagnum moss is rampant. There's also boil flax, a poisonous plant that sets the skin to blistering just at a touch.

Birds like the merlin and golden plover nest among the poisonous thickets.

Few deer and other tame beasts live in the moors, but they are not truly uncommon.

River otters make their homes at the rivers' edge of the moors. Vicious, nasty things with a greed for flesh.

Localized Phenomena

The Drowned - A strange necromantic occurrence where those that slip into the brackish waters, sucking muds or quick sands eventually return as muck-covered and ravenous undead. Scholars seem to think that areas in the Bulthron have a sort of threshold. When a sufficient amount of corpses build up and meet this threshold, small hordes of mud caked undead surge from their moors and attack anything in their way.
