The group decides what to do next. Concerned about possible dangers in Niman Agerson's workshop, Ren stays to guard it. Warden Fario Tanikus volunteers to find a Vigilant in his district with arcane knowledge that may be able to help with the portal that Niman may have inadvertently opened. Meriel, Zarin, and Tor'in head towards The Solari at the Giving Hands to look for Kith. If the Singers are involved, then they think that Kith could help with her gift of music that effects the Singers. Amos, Sendara, and Rubin Wiley head upstairs to the administrative officers of Renatus Hall to shut down the building for the protection of the students and faculty.

On the way to the Oldkeep neighborhood, Meriel makes sure to get a large hooded cloak to disguise Kith. When they reach the Giving Hands, they can see that the place has been growing. They find the Solari leader there, Rector Kennick, who introduces them to a new member of his flock, Malcolm Gerardus. A retired army captain wounded at the Battle of Viterbo, Captain Gerardus has a supernatural gift, like Kith, Sana, and others have shown.

Kith is soon found, and with her is Thesserram, an imposing Solari Caithan that serves as her protector. Tor'in decides that Thesserram looks worthy enough to look after Kith, and his battle-ready eyes tell him that Thesserram is a skilled unarmed warrior. Kith gives them all hugs in greeting. Meriel explains to Kith that they need her help and why. Meriel does add that it could be dangerous, but that they will do everything to keep Kith safe. Meriel hides Kith under the cloak and hood, and the strange group travel together back towards Pallida University.

With Sendara leading the way, she, Rubin and Amos approach Professor Lorensa Trena and encourage her to evacuate the building. Talking to Professor Trena, they learn about Professor Marcus Renatus, who the building is named after. He studied Arcstones, and died four years ago in an accident doing research. He also suffered from a terminal illness, but despite it he was a passionate teacher beloved by students and fellow faculty. The details of his accident are unknown, and Professor Trena thinks they may have been covered up by Dean Tassus. Sendara and Amos ask to see the research Renatus was working on, and learned that it was locked in the library because it was potentially dangerous and related to an accident. It was supposed to have been officially reviewed at some point, but that never happened.

Sendara decides to head to the library, and led the way there. After briefly talking to Aulus Viziri, she simply walks through the library offices to head librarian Cai Cadwulf. They convince him to take them to Professor Renatus's research. He leads the way to the lower levels, eventually unlocking an arcane door with a series of gestures. Rubin guards the entrance while the others go deeper inside. Cai asks them to not to touch anything. After traveling through several rooms they reach a series of walls lined with small drawers, each labeled with different numbers.

After unlocking a drawer for Renatus's research, the head librarian mentions that each person has their own unique unlocking. Cai can detect who last unlocked the drawer, and says that it was him 3 years ago. Sendara reads over the notes and finds research on prolonging life and mitigating illness, concepts that skate perversion of Lotrad's ideology. But there is nothing about arcstones. Sendara believes that any research on arcstones was never put there in the first place. She asks Cai to check who accessed the drawer before he did three years ago, and he reveals it was the orcish historian Hakur. Cai says that Hakur could not have opened the entrance to the archives, and would have needed an escort. He tells Amos and Sendara that he will find out who that was and send a runner to inform them.

The group gets back together at the tea house in Rattlestone, and compare notes. Sendara is told about Hakur, and some ideas about his missing assistant, Nissra Hadenog.
