Sounding of the Draakhorn

February 24, 2023

My gift to the most loyal of my worshippers on the sphere called Toril, crafted from a horn of a long-passed consort, the ancient Unknown Ephelomon. The sound shall call forth my children to rally for my ascendancy and deserving sacrifices in the worshippers of the newly-enlightened Cult of the Dragon.

Events around the moment the Draakhorn sounded, rippling its call across the continent of Faerûn.

Far North

(from In-Spired) Out on the ice tundra, east of Kelvin's Cairn, within the Lost Spire of The Netheril ruins, the Divination wizard Alyks Askaria has been forewarned of this coming and prepared her companions. An ancient scrying chamber seals its cracks in time and space with a light tinkling noise, alerting the Tiefling and her fellows to retreat to the surface. As the waves reached that region, this group of heroes felt a sudden shift in the wind, bringing with it a strange sense of unease. The feeling akin to the drop in air pressure before the approach of a deadly storm, or faint tremors felt from a landslide or earthquake far away. The persistent howl across the ice silenced, as if the sky was holding is breath. High above, the last of the clouds roll away - snuffed by a wide-arcing ripple, as innumerable stars twinkled in the clearest darkest sky the group had looked upon. (Heartbeat. Heartbeat. Heartbeat.) Several then felt a tingle but a moment before the ice below heaved, knocking all to hands and knees. A roaring tone passed through felt in bodies moreso than heard, followed by groans and cracking as a monstrous ice crack devoured the lost spire of the Netheril, leaving a narrow crevasse, jagged on the smooth landscape. Waterdeep

That sudden shift in the wind and unease in the drop in air pressure washes through the streets and alleys and docks of Waterdeep.  The entire city suddenly goes unnaturally quiet - no dogs bark, no birds squawk. Even the street vendors have gone silent. The silence lasts only a moment before the normal sounds of the city's bustle returns as the unexplained sensation of a rumble too faint to quite hear fades. Subtle changes appear in the behavior of animals: dogs are nervous and on edge, horses are skittish, cats are more feral than usual, and rats gather in large, bold packs. People attuned to the magical weave becoming nervous, fearful, and impatient.

Encouraged by Mon-Kei in his new official role with the Lords Alliance, several members of Our Party join him in a meeting called by the Council of Waterdeep.  Employing the Yuir portals, they are in the city within the day.

Out of the confused arguing of many in the room, a Waterdhavian noblewoman raises her voice, insisting on being heard.

I am Dala Silmerhelve, a Lady of this City of Splendors, some of you know me and I hope encourage others to trust my words. The disturbance that's been sensed across the Sword Coast is the sounding of the Draakhorn, an ancient device whose sounding alerts dragons across Faerûn that great events are unfolding. It's impossible to say what the sounding means, but the dragons hear it clearly and will eventually answer its call.

The noblewoman is questioned for the source of her knowledge, which she flatly refuses to reveal. The council is then torn on to what extent they should act on her warning - with Ontharr Frume (Order of the Gauntlet), Ulder Ravengard (of Baldur's Gate), and the dwarven King Connerad Brawnanvil (of Mithral Hall) most vocally skeptical and suspicious.  Finding Lady Silmerhelve alone and exasperated as the council breaks for dinner, Mon-Kei and Yeet Longshade question her further, with the High Harper Remallia Haventree. Dala will only share that her family has close ties with the affairs of dragons, and this matter is most serious. (See: Old White Death).

Western Heartlands

The strongest sensations of this event are reported in the center of the Western Heartlands, inland from Baldur's Gate.

Cormyr

The lands of Cormyr have also been strongly affected by the sounding, noting a sharp rise in the activity of dragons, in particular ones not seen in decades if not centuries.
