The party are gathered on The Alacrity, a cargo vessel set to berth at the docks of Spearpoint. It is a week's journey across the sea and the four characters are unknown to each other, bar their pressence on the ship. Each are aboard the vessel for their own personal reasons:
Artax Raelson. While he has taken this quest as a sell sword, he has a deeper desire to explore the lands of his elven birth mother.
Fenris Velante, a former highwayman is trying to escape prosecution and the noose. He is wanted for his association with a military rebellion in South Dawnreach, and for his involvement in accounts of theft against noble houses.
Mornington Lormanston, a bard and noblemen, travels bearing gifts for a distant family member who lives in Mordred Plains. He wishes to gain favour and find riches in the new land that could return his family name to its former glory.
Edward Fogbluff, a teenage boy, is working as a deck hand for the ship's captain Wilmot Alderman. He took the job after fleeing his home following the death of his abusive mentor. Edward seeks answers about his newly found Warlock powers in the fractured frontier of Guradam.
With only one day of sailing left, land had been spotted, and it was just a matter of following the south coast of Usta until the Capital Spearpoint revealed itself. But a very sudden storm darkened the sky with rapidly expanding clouds and the sounds of bellowing thunder. The ship was battling against rough waters when a sudden lightning strike shreds the mast of the ship, causing immense damage. The crew and Captain try to keep the ship from veering but the ship crashes on nearby coral, spewing debris and all its passengers to shore.
Artax, Edward, Fenris and Mornington come to, blinking salt water from their eyes and the crashed ship is now only one part of their problem. In close proximity a band of Goblin skirmishers have descended upon the ship and its crew from the nearby forest. They start looting, taking prisoners and killing any who resist. The Party spring into action and slay a number of goblins on the sandy shore before the rest are driven off. However, the Goblins have disappeared with some of the ships cargo, including the delivery for King Dras. Many of the crew are missing including Captain Wilmot, the only person they know who could possibly navigate them through this wilderness.
