Ree-Mai are the sibling species of the Mikaru and Arrash, and have a beastlike, canine appearance. It is said that that the Illiadian creation-deity, Rencal Kei-Rhai, created the Mikaru out of his own imagination, while he created the Ree-Mai by basing them on his own self-image. However, in oder to have them stay humble, he limited the Ena-abilities of most of the members of their race, only blessing the bloodlines of their shamans with stronger Ena-Powers. Many Ree-Mai follow the traditions of Rencalism in a stricter way, and live in tribes to become one with nature, with their clergy being non-centralized and shamanistic. However, many also venture out, or live in cities, or towns with other races, while still holding onto their traditional belief systems. Cities with Ree-Mai populations often have small shrines located in parks or just outside the city walls, where Ree-Mai can pray and ask a shaman for guidance. Loyalty is an important virtue in Ree-Mai society, to the point where some other races sometimes derogatively call them "Lap Dogs", but this description doesn't do their ideas on the concept of loyalty justice. Rather than beeing submissive, Ree-Mai see themselves as partners in arms to the people they're loyal to.

Unskilled with Ena, yet thoroughly affected by it

Many Ree-Mai, though not all of them, have large, almost tattoo-like marks on the left sides of their torsi that are colored in the color of their particular Ree-Mai culture, as Ree-Mai, like Mikaru, are shaped by their environment a lot. These seem to be a side-effect of their ancestors practicing ritualistic tattooing in a way that permanently changed their bloodline with Ena, to the point where these tattoo-like marks may still appear on their fur and skin generations after, always looking different. Despite the odd circumstances of their appearance, these marks are usually purely aesthetic in nature.

Many tribes are led either directly or indirectly by their shamans, who are, due to their uniquely blessed bloodlines, often the only ones in their tribes who have any real proficiency with Ena-Abilities. These shamans, who to outsiders often seem like a mix of Druids and Clerics (and in recent times have taken on many traditions from native druids and clerics), try to guide their people by the words of Rencal, while also keeping an open mind and an open ear for everyone and their problems. The waning connection to Illiad and weakening of Ena-Abilities since the Great Wasting however has led to many Ree-Mai picking up magic; which has led to even those unskilled in Ena to take on the mantle of Clerics and Druids.

Unity in division

While tribal culture is what is most well-known about the Ree-Mai, about half of the Ree-Mai population on ancient Illiad and even today on Sancstoryl actually live pretty urbanized lifes, and not just in small villages or townships. Most city-dwelling Ree-Mai, even those who for generations haven't lived in a tribal village, often still have close family, extended family and friends living in tribal communities, and are often extremely close to them, as well as to their ancestral tribes. This attitude and acceptance between non-tribal Ree-Mai and tribal Ree-Mai has been the standard for eons, but there once was a period in the eras before the Era of Shadow where Ree-Mai living outside the tribal system were more or less shunned. This mindset eventually faded with time, and after the Era of Shadows and all its hardships put a lot into perspective, this mindset completely disappeared.
