“Few houses fall so far, fewer still rise again. But none do it with such flair as the Rosznars.”
The Librarian

House Rosznar is a noble family of Waterdeep, once disgraced and exiled for illicit dealings in slave trading, but later restored to status—if not quite to grace. In the Contemporary Era, they stand as one of the most controversial noble houses, struggling to rebuild their influence while shaking off the long shadow of their past.

Publicly, the Rosznars claim to represent redemption, rebirth, and reformation. Privately, some still whisper that old habits die hard, and that their coffers still benefit from the suffering of others.

The family’s most famous scion today is not a politician, but a bardAmbrose Rosznar, one of the founding members of the Hype Squad, whose antics, flamboyance, and explosive fame have done more to rehabilitate the family’s image than any political maneuvering.

History

House Rosznar was a powerful mercantile house during the 13th and 14th centuries DR, known for its trade in rare goods from Thay and beyond. However, evidence surfaced that they had secretly profited from slavery, violating both Waterdhavian law and moral consensus.

They were stripped of noble status and exiled from The Lords' Alliance for decades.

It was only in the 15th century DR that the family clawed its way back into relevance. Through a combination of:

  • Public philanthropy
  • Strategic marriages
  • And, as rumors hold, some well-placed bribes…they were restored to the ranks of nobility, though always with asterisks attached.

Current Standing

In the Contemporary Era, House Rosznar remains wealthy, stylish, and publicly repentant. They are known for:

  • Hosting elaborate masquerades and salons
  • Sponsoring artists, dueling competitions, and magical showcases
  • Donating (lavishly) to orphanages, bard colleges, and anti-slavery causes
  • A thriving expertise in wine and cheese

Still, many in Waterdeep—especially among the older noble lines—refuse to forget their past. The term “Rosznar smile” is still slang for a pleasant mask hiding a dagger.

Their Sea Ward estate, rebuilt with enchanted marble and crimson glass, is often viewed as both a monument to vanity and a reminder of Waterdeep’s capacity for forgiveness—or at least profitable amnesia.

Notable Members

Ambrose Rosznar

Adventurer, bard, and heartthrob; a founding member of the Hype Squad. Known for his dramatic flair, pointed critiques of nobility, and tangled relationship with both the Harpers and Zhentarim.

Ambrose has been instrumental in:

  • Elevating House Rosznar’s image among the common folk
  • Turning noble excess into satirical weaponry
  • Linking the house to the events of The Grand Game (whether they liked it or not)

Some whisper he is a plant by the Harpers. Others claim he simply loves the chaos.

Lady Callia Rosznar

Ambrose’s aunt, a stern and politically savvy woman who manages the household’s public face. Known to alternate between deep pride and migraines when speaking of her nephew.

Political Relations

  • Harpers: Cautiously supportive, due to Ambrose’s involvement.

  • Zhentarim: Unofficial trade links exist, though disavowed by House leaders.

  • Cassalanters: Distrustful rivals, particularly after recent revelations.

  • Lords' Alliance: Considered a liability by some, a reformed success story by others.

  • Bregan D'aerthe: Ambrose’s friendship with Jarlaxle Baenre is raising some noble eyebrows.

Reputation

  • Among nobles: “Too loud to be respectable, too rich to be ignored.”

  • Among commoners: “The good Rosznars—the ones that sing, not sell.”

  • Among adventurers: “Their parties are deadly, and not always metaphorically.”

Closing Remarks

House Rosznar reminds us that masks do not always hide monsters. Sometimes, they hide mirrors. Watch what they reflect.
