“It was never the blood that stained the marble halls that troubled the Watch. It was the secrets still echoing through the house, whispering who hired whom... and who lived to silence them.”
The Librarian

Gralhund Villa was once a symbol of noble reformation in Waterdeep. The Gralhund family, having clawed their way back into the ranks of the city’s elite through metallurgy and mercantile finesse, purchased and refurbished the estate in the North Ward during the late 1480s DR. Ostensibly a monument to their prosperity, the villa hid a darker purpose—serving as a staging ground for Manshoon-loyalist Zhentarim, and later, a key nexus in the unfolding chaos of The Grand Game.

By 1492 DR, the villa became the site of one of Waterdeep’s most infamous noble scandals, marking the bloody unraveling of both the Gralhund name and one of the Eyes of Golorr.

Architecture

The villa is a sprawling three-story estate, surrounded by wrought iron gates and rose gardens said to be imported from Amn. Designed in the Baroque-Restorative style, its facade belied the secrets within.

Key features include:

  • A private armory disguised as a conservatory

  • Hidden passageways leading to both sewers and Skullport Tunnels

  • An underground vault chamber (never completed)

  • Enchanted scry-proof meeting rooms

  • A mounted griffon statue rumored to be a dormant construct

Role in the Grand Game

Gralhund Villa’s downfall began with the Fireball Incident—an explosive act of arcane terrorism that occurred just outside its walls. At the time, Urstul Floxin and his agents were within the villa, negotiating the retrieval of an Eye of Golorr that had passed through Gralhund hands.

Notable Events:

  • The Fireball: Believed to be the result of a stolen Necklace of Fireballs detonated either by mistake or by sabotage. Multiple casualties occurred, including bystanders, guards, and rival agents. This would be one of two notable fireball incidents within the month, the other triggering Martial Law throughout the city.

  • Urstul Floxin's Final Stand: Shortly after the explosion, The Hype Squad pursued Floxin into the villa. A brutal battle ensued in the hallways and guest chambers. Floxin was believed slain, though no body was recovered. He would later be found, alive, by the Hype Squad in the Manshoon's Lair in Kolat Towers.

  • Eye of Golorr Trail: The villa was intended to be a handoff site for Manshoon’s splinter cell, but the interference of the Cassalanters and other factions may have altered the timeline in addition to the conflict of interest of the Gralhunds themselves being a part of the Cassalanter Cult.

  • Public Fallout: With noble blood spilled, bodies burned, and private guards exposed as criminal agents, the Gralhund name was left in political ruin. Their holdings were seized by the Watch for investigation.

Aftermath and Legacy

Today, the villa remains sealed. Despite multiple appeals from surviving Gralhund kin, the City Watch and Blackstaff Tower maintain a permanent arcane quarantine around the estate.

Rumors include:

  • The vault beneath the villa was never opened and may still contain forbidden artifacts.

  • At least one Eye of Golorr imprint may have residual echoes trapped in the walls.

  • The ghost of Floxin, or perhaps something worse, stalks the upper floor at night.

  • A backup clone body for Manshoon was smuggled through the villa shortly before the Fireball Incident.

No official party has been granted full investigatory clearance since the incident—though it is rumored the Hype Squad returned secretly at least once, briefly, during the height of the Grand Game.

Closing Remarks

What fools believe power is safest behind locked gates and gilded walls? Gralhund Villa teaches us otherwise. Within its walls, secrets withered, lies fermented, and ambition burned until only ash—and the stench of betrayal—remained.
